About The Position

Prime Video is seeking an Applied Science Manager to lead the Content Understanding team. This team is responsible for enabling Prime Video to 'see' and 'understand' video content, including characters, scenes, dialogue, events, and visual elements. The manager will lead a team of scientists and engineers in building the next generation of video understanding and search capabilities for Prime Video. This role involves owning the strategy, execution, and delivery of systems that allow machines to watch, describe, and find content within a large streaming catalog. The team's mission is to deeply understand content to automate and scale solutions, launch new experiences, and advance scientific outputs for Prime Video.

Requirements

• 4+ years of applied research experience
• 3+ years of experience managing scientists or machine learning engineers
• 3+ years of experience building machine learning models for business applications
• PhD, or Master's degree and 6+ years of applied research experience
• Knowledge of ML, NLP, Information Retrieval and Analytics
• Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language

Nice To Haves

• Experience building complex software systems, especially involving deep learning, machine learning and computer vision, that have been successfully delivered to customers

Responsibilities

• Define and drive the technical direction and roadmap for 'understanding' and 'search' workstreams, ensuring alignment with Prime Video's content intelligence goals.
• Lead and grow a high-performing team of scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of scientific excellence, customer focus, and reliable delivery.
• Partner with cross-functional teams within Prime Video (e.g., personalization, search) to understand their needs, shape outputs into reliable building blocks, and drive adoption.
• Manage end-to-end delivery, from research and experimentation to launching production systems at Prime Video's scale.
• Define and track success metrics for quality, reliability, and real-world impact on downstream products.
• Manage ambiguity across various workstreams, make clear prioritization decisions, and communicate trade-offs effectively to senior leadership.
