About The Position

Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) is currently searching for an adjunct faculty to teach Applied Saxophone at the KCKCC Main Campus location. The instructor will teach primarily Applied Lessons with an opportunity to teach other music courses as qualified. Applicants must have experience in both the Western Art and American Jazz idioms. There may be additional sections to be taught at any location including daytime, online, virtually and/or at area high schools. This is a POOL position. Application materials for this adjunct position are accepted on an on-going basis due to increasing demand for courses in this subject area.

Requirements

  • Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to and ability to work with a multi-cultural student and faculty population.
  • High energy, self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships and establish credibility with all levels of employee in the organization.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to manage several projects with multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Master’s degree in Music Performance, Music Education or Jazz Studies; or substantial documented professional performance experience
  • Three (3+) plus years’ professional performance experience on primary instrument
  • Two (2) years’ teaching experience on primary instrument

Nice To Haves

  • Doctoral degree in Music Performance, Music Education or Jazz Studies; or substantial documented professional performance experience
  • Five (5+) plus years’ professional performance experience on a primary instrument
  • Three (3) years of teaching experience on a primary instrument
  • Teaching experience in an open-enrollment, urban community college
  • Active performer on primary instrument
  • Experience with a Learning Management System such as Blackboard
  • Experience in learner-centered pedagogy
  • Experience with jazz, musical theatre, or other styles of American Popular Music

Responsibilities

  • Hold all class sessions according to schedule.
  • Provide instruction, activities, assignments, and assessments to meet the Music Department Student Learning Outcomes for the specific course(s) taught.
  • Use teaching methods that emphasize application, cooperation and collaboration and engage students actively in their studies, encouraging them to become independent learners with higher-order thinking skills.
  • Organize and explain content using methods which are appropriate to students with differing abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experience.
  • Assign and provide feedback for in- and out-of-class work, monitor student progress.
  • Perform adequate assessment and analysis of assessment according to college requirements.
  • Reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one's own pedagogy.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the appropriate supervisor.
