About The Position

The Applied Data Science Manager leads a team of applied data scientists to turn complex client problems into compelling insights and recommendations using dunnhumby’s data science capabilities. The role combines technical expertise, client understanding and people leadership to connect client strategy with advanced data science and deliver high-quality, timely work with measurable commercial impact.

The manager partners with Client Leads to shape annual client workplans, allocate resources, and identify opportunities to create value through dunnhumby products, analytical techniques and science. They build relationships with clients and internal stakeholders, guide teams in deploying algorithms and market products on appropriate technology stacks, and foster reusable, scalable solutions and strong quality standards.

Requirements

• Experience applying advanced statistical models and machine learning algorithms to complex problems, with a practical focus on customer impact.
• Experience handling large data volumes using modern processing tools such as Hadoop, Spark, SQL or Python.
• Strong data analysis, modelling and project management skills.
• Ability to frame problems, test hypotheses and turn findings into clear recommendations.
• Strong client and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to present analytical methodologies, insights and solutions through effective storytelling.
• Experience leading and developing people.
• Appreciation for product development, quality assurance, and creating reusable, scalable data science solutions.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of applied data scientists and create an environment focused on clear commercial impact.
• Partner with Client Leads to shape annual client workplans around business needs and strategy, and allocate people and resources to deliver measurable, timely results.
• Guide the team in translating complex client challenges into insights and recommendations using advanced data science to support executive decision-making and action.
• Build relationships with internal stakeholders and clients so the team understands client challenges, growth strategies and measures of success.
• Promote reuse of dunnhumby science, modules and code, and guide deployment of data science algorithms and market products on appropriate technology stacks.
• Hire, mentor, motivate and retain applied data scientists.
• Maintain high standards for quality assurance, ways of working and coding.
