Applied AI Product Designer

Citizen•New York, NY
•Onsite

About The Position

Citizen is seeking a senior product designer to lead the consumer mobile experience and own the revenue surface for its AI-native company. This role involves defining the future of product design at Citizen, working directly with the Founder and CEO. The designer will be responsible for creating a product that users open daily, designing intuitive interfaces for real-time video and live safety, optimizing the subscription experience for conversion and retention, and establishing a design operation where AI agents handle production work. The position inherits a product with millions of users, a recognized brand, and the opportunity to invent a new category of safety application.

Requirements

  • Approximately a decade of experience designing and shipping consumer mobile products used by millions, end-to-end.
  • Demonstrated taste and the ability to showcase work that proves it.
  • Strong discernment: ability to identify the best options from a large set and articulate why.
  • Experience creating something new, such as a novel interaction, category, or product perceived as futuristic.
  • High agency: ability to take a direction and propose a better one, make decisions, ship, and build tools when necessary.
  • Experience building and running AI agents to automate parts of the design workflow (e.g., asset generation, prototyping).
  • Systems thinking: understanding of how design languages (type, color, motion, sound) function and persist.
  • Experience owning an outcome, not just a surface, including running A/B tests for revenue-generating features (paywalls, pricing, onboarding) and making data-driven decisions.
  • Comfort acting as a product manager when no dedicated PM is present.
  • Fluency in video and motion design; ability to prototype in high fidelity and speed on a real device.
  • Sufficient comfort with code to get ideas onto a phone without waiting for an engineer.
  • Ability to lead by example and help a small team perform at its best.
  • A strong sense of mission and care for the impact of safety on real people.
  • Ability to make confident decisions with incomplete information and handle direct feedback from leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Define the future of product design at Citizen as an AI-native company.
  • Lead the consumer mobile experience (iOS first, Android close behind), including onboarding, map, incident experience, live video, alerts, and Premium features.
  • Own the revenue product, including paywalls, plan mix, trials, upgrade paths, and payment at onboarding.
  • Develop and evolve Citizen's design system across product, brand, and the live broadcast studio.
  • Create high-fidelity prototypes rapidly (days, not weeks) using tools like Figma, Origami, SwiftUI, or code.
  • Conduct usability sessions, analyze funnel data, and run live experiments to validate designs.
  • Design and manage AI-powered workflows for production tasks such as asset generation and prototyping.
  • Collaborate daily with the Founder and CEO on product direction.
  • Partner closely with iOS and Android engineering on shipping timelines.
  • Work with Marketing on launches, Real-Time Operations on user needs, and existing AI agents.
  • Ship visible improvements to production within the first 30 days.
  • Set the product design agenda, including key bets, system design, and operational strategy within the first 60 days.
  • Ship the first category-defining experience to real users and set the twelve-month design roadmap within the first 90 days.

Benefits

  • Base salary of $155,000–$215,000 per year
  • Meaningful equity
