About The Position

The Applications Lead (Epic Interoperability) is responsible for the technical design, implementation, optimization, and ongoing support of Epic interfaces, APIs, and data conversion solutions, with primary ownership of Epic Bridges and the interoperability services that connect Epic with internal and external systems. This role balances approximately 50% hands-on technical work and 50% people leadership, providing deep integration expertise while managing and developing a team of interoperability analysts. The Applications Lead oversees HL7, FHIR, web services, file-based, and data conversion work across the solution lifecycle and partners closely with application, infrastructure, security, data, operational, vendor, and trading-partner teams to deliver secure, reliable, scalable, and compliant exchange of healthcare information.

Requirements

8+ years professional related experience with a Bachelor's degree; 1+ years of supervisory/management experience.
Proven hands-on experience in application build, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting within large-scale healthcare systems.
Extensive hands-on Epic interoperability experience, including Epic Bridges interface build, configuration, testing, troubleshooting, deployment, monitoring, and optimization in a large-scale healthcare environment.
Active Epic Bridges certification, with the ability and willingness to maintain required certifications.
Strong knowledge of HL7 v2 messaging, including common ADT, SIU, ORM, ORU, DFT, and master-file workflows, with experience analyzing message structure, mappings, acknowledgments, errors, and end-to-end data flow.
Working knowledge of FHIR R4 resources and RESTful APIs, including JSON and XML payloads, SMART on FHIR, OAuth 2.0, authentication, authorization, and secure API integration patterns.
Experience with healthcare interoperability standards and terminology, such as C-CDA, X12, DICOM, NCPDP, LOINC, SNOMED CT, ICD, CPT, and NPI, as applicable to connected workflows.
Experience with an enterprise interface engine or integration platform, such as Epic Bridges, InterSystems HealthShare or Ensemble, Rhapsody, Cloverleaf, or Mirth Connect, including routing, transformation, monitoring, and error handling.
Experience leading healthcare data conversion and migration activities, including source-system analysis, SQL-based data validation, source-to-target mapping, transformation logic, reconciliation, cutover planning, and load-quality verification.
Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring technical analysts, setting priorities, balancing production support and project delivery, conducting design or peer reviews, and supporting professional development and certification maintenance.
Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate operational requirements into technical designs, lead cross-functional discussions, manage vendors and external partners, and communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical audiences.
Experience with application implementations, upgrades, or major system enhancements.
Experience partnering with operational and business stakeholders to translate workflows into system solutions.
Experience coordinating with vendors, third-party partners, and internal IT teams.
Ability to manage multiple priorities across operational support and project work.
Demonstrated ability to lead teams, set priorities, and balance workloads across support and project initiatives.
Experience leading, coaching, or supervising application analysts or technical staff.

Nice To Haves

Epic certification or demonstrated experience with Interconnect, Care Everywhere, Data Courier, or related integration technologies is preferred.

Responsibilities

Lead advanced Epic interoperability design, build, testing, implementation, and optimization efforts, serving as the primary owner for Epic Bridges and ensuring interface, API, and conversion solutions are scalable, supportable, secure, and aligned with enterprise standards.
Act as the senior technical authority and escalation point for interoperability services, accountable for interface availability, message integrity, performance, error resolution, and long-term sustainability across Epic and connected systems.
Balance hands-on technical responsibilities with people leadership by configuring and troubleshooting interfaces while managing and developing analysts responsible for Epic integrations, APIs, and data conversion activities.
Establish and enforce interoperability architecture, governance, and design standards for HL7 v2, FHIR, C-CDA, REST and SOAP web services, secure file exchange, and related integration patterns in partnership with Enterprise Architecture, Infrastructure, Security, Data, and application teams.
Lead the end-to-end interface lifecycle, including requirements discovery, workflow analysis, technical specifications, message mapping, build, unit and integrated testing, deployment, monitoring, and production support for clinical, operational, and business data exchanges.
Provide technical leadership for Epic data conversions and migrations, including source-to-target mapping, data profiling, transformation rules, ETL coordination, validation, reconciliation, defect resolution, cutover planning, and post-load verification.
Lead change and release governance for Epic interoperability services, coordinating upgrades, enhancements, certificate changes, vendor releases, downtime procedures, production deployments, and rollback plans to minimize disruption and operational risk.
Provide day-to-day leadership, performance management, and mentorship to interoperability analysts, setting clear expectations for build quality, documentation, monitoring, support readiness, certification maintenance, and adherence to Epic and organizational standards.
Drive operational excellence through interface monitoring, alerting, service-level metrics, root cause analysis, capacity planning, and continuous improvement of support processes, data quality controls, and incident response.
Serve as a trusted partner to application owners, operational leaders, vendors, health information exchanges, and other external partners, providing clear accountability for integration outcomes, technical decisions, issue resolution, and roadmap alignment.
Perform other duties as assigned, recognizing that responsibilities may evolve with organizational, regulatory, and interoperability priorities.
