Under broad supervision, responsible for a range of moderately complex engineering tasks in new product development projects associated with design proposals, testing, feasibility analysis, mathematical modeling, sample building, manufacturing processes assessment, etc. to develop and implement new methods, designs and products. Writes engineering specifications and interprets/analyses test results. Role typically requires between 3 and 5 years of experience. We are seeking an experienced Applications Engineer to join our highly skilled engineering team. The Applications Engineer will be responsible for customer-facing technical initiatives for product lines that service multiple industries, which include marine, RV, electric motors, as well as lighting and signs. The Applications Engineer will assist the engineering department with design and sustainability projects as required but will maintain a primary focus on servicing a diverse customer base by providing technical product expertise to the end user. A few of the many products include electric drive motors, electric blowers, winches, jacks, transformers, and more. The diversity of marketplaces and product lines creates an exciting and ever-changing environment for the Applications Engineer to display their technical expertise, product design capabilities, and communication skillset. The Applications Engineer will be equipped with all the necessary tools required to perform the job at a high level. For any engineering design, SolidWorks is used for all 3D modeling and detailing efforts. An ERP system is used to control all bills of materials and item masters. The Applications Engineer will have access to a fully furnished engineering lab and machine shop to support product design, customer product testing, and prototyping. Most importantly, the Applications Engineer will have great support from an experienced and highly skilled engineering team. The engineer that excels in this position will be an individual of high work ethic and character, is self-motivated, can operate under minimal supervision, maintains close attention to detail, and embodies exceptional organization and communication skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • 3D modeling proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable CAD software
  • Drafting proficiency
  • Strong technical skills and understanding of engineering principles
  • Punctuality and work ethic
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to travel (up to 25%)

Nice To Haves

  • Sales experience
  • Basic understanding of GD&T
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes including injection molding, CNC machining, die casting, and sheet metal fabrication
  • Experience with various hand tools and lab equipment such as power tools, soldering equipment, measurement devices, dynamometers, etc.
  • Experience in medium to high volume manufacturing
  • Some understanding of motors and electronics

Responsibilities

  • Function as a key technical representative to customers across various product lines.
  • Display a comprehensive understanding of product offerings and how each product works in order to communicate clearly with both customers and design engineering.
  • Travel to customer sites for new sales opportunities as well as servicing exiting customer needs.
  • Ability to travel and operate independently.
  • Research markets and identify new potential product offerings.
  • Design product concepts based on customer needs or market trends.
  • Assist customer service as required with technical expertise.
  • Work collaboratively within an engineering team of mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers to assist with new products and upkeep existing product lines.
  • Work with the Director of Engineering and representatives from Sales & Marketing to accurately capture product requirements and translate those requirements into a marketable design concept.
  • Research and understand applicable design and agency standards as required.
  • Engineer and support new product designs from initial concept to manufacturing implementation with design engineering.
  • Utilize SolidWorks for all engineering efforts.
  • Assist with product updates within ERP system.
  • Display knowledge of various manufacturing processes including CNC machining, stamping, injection molding, die casting, and more to understand product manufacturing practices.
  • Clearly communicate and collaborate with various members of the purchasing team to assist in sourcing manufacturing components.
  • Provide detailed design presentations.
  • Assist with building and testing prototypes and production representative designs to ensure viability before releasing for production.
  • Analyze test results and ensure compliance with all deliverables and standards.
  • Participate in the New Product Development Phase Gate process as well as the Engineering Change Notice (ECN) process as required.
  • Other duties as required.
