The work involves Windows Installer technology and solving detailed packaging challenges for reliable, repeatable deployments across thousands of endpoints. The role includes building silent installation packages in MSI, MST, and MSIX formats; validating installations on Windows 11; documenting requirements and solutions; supporting deployment and production issues; and preparing, building, updating, and maintaining repeatable virtual machines using VMware vSphere. Salary is commensurate with experience. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and able to achieve Public Trust Clearance at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including technical documentation skills.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with customers, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams, independently and as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail in packaging, component rules, dependencies, and validation.
  • Solid documentation skills enabling other engineers to follow technical documentation without guesswork.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred 1+ years of IT system administration experience; the preferred qualifications also specify 3–5 years of IT system administration experience.
  • Experience with PSADT (PowerShell App Deployment Toolkit).
  • Experience supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs or another federal organization.

  • Knowledge of ProcMon, MSI logging, and Windows Event Logs.
  • Understanding of Windows Installer technology, including custom actions, transforms, ICE validation, component rules, repair behavior, reboot handling, and logging.
  • Experience testing, validating, and certifying Windows platform and application compatibility, including interoperability with technologies such as Citrix.
  • Experience performing application performance analysis and troubleshooting with Microsoft and commercial toolsets to evaluate CPU, memory, disk I/O, network latency, and bandwidth utilization.

Responsibilities

  • Build silent installation packages in MSI, MST, and MSIX formats and validate them through initial installation testing on Windows 11.
  • Engage with internal customers to gather packaging requirements and translate them into technical documentation and scalable solutions.
  • Perform end-to-end packaging activities, including source validation, building, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Troubleshoot packaging and deployment issues using ProcMon, MSI verbose logging, and Windows Event Logs; identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Query and modify the Windows Registry as part of packaging and deployment workflows.
  • Participate in peer reviews and QA of packages to ensure quality and consistency with project standards.
  • Account for prerequisites, dependencies, and organizational packaging and deployment standards in each solution.
