About The Position

The APP Lead (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) will provide guidance and oversight to a defined team of APPs working in the NSICU areas, while also working clinically as an APP on the unit. The Lead will evaluate and manage inpatients on the Neurological Surgery Service while also managing the schedule, providing basic clinical oversight and bi-directional communication of operational priorities.

Requirements

  • Current licensure as a Physician Assistant or currently licensed as an APRN.
  • One year of experience as an APP.
  • Experience in a managerial or leadership role is required.
  • AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP or Adult NP) license type/certification.
  • FNP (Family NP) license type/certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • DHEC license.
  • DEA license.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 1 year of Neurosurgical care as an NP/PA-C.
  • At least two years of experience as an APP.
  • Prior supervision of Advanced Practice Providers.
  • Participation within an Advanced Practice Provider leadership program.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance and oversight to a defined team of APPs working in the NSICU areas.
  • Evaluate and manage inpatients on the Neurological Surgery Service.
  • Manage the schedule for the APP team.
  • Provide basic clinical oversight to the APP team.
  • Communicate operational priorities to the APP team.
  • Hold monthly meetings with APPs.
  • Attend APP Manager meetings.
  • Attend department faculty/staff meetings and cascade information to APP team.
  • Conduct APP interviews and record progress.
  • Partner with department leadership and HR for job offer/salary quotes.
  • Ensure Transition to Practice document is given to new APP hires.
  • Assist with 30/60/90/120 day evaluations with physician and/or department leadership.
  • Perform 1:1 meetings with APPs on a regular basis.
  • Assist with performance evaluations with physician and/or department leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with annual mandatories or other compliance-related requirements.
  • Coordinate APP student rotations for both internal and external students.
  • Coordinate APP fellow rotations if applicable.
  • Assist with APRN Practice Agreements and PA Scope of Practice documents to ensure compliance with state boards and MUSC Credentialing.
  • Develop and implement any new initiatives involving APPs.
  • Assist in coaching and facilitating the development, support, and management of the APRN/PA group within the department.
  • Develop staffing systems which respond effectively and quickly to changes in patient volume, acuity or service demands.
  • Provides direct care to patients.
  • Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations.
  • Evaluates and treats patients based on history, physical examination, and diagnostic test results.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures in accordance with procedural privileges, skill and proficiency.
  • Assists/performs Lumbar Puncture, Central Venous line placement, Pulmonary Artery Catheterization, Arterial line placement, Endotracheal Intubation, Chest Tube placement, Bronchoscopy, Thoracentesis, Paracentesis.
  • Performs suturing/stapling, and removal of catheters/tubes/drains as needed.
  • Initiates referrals to other health care providers and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician.
  • Potential to first assist in the operating room.
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student.
  • Facilitates the learning of other new team members.
  • Maintains licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law.
