About The Position

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellow (Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant) will participate in a one-year fellowship program focused on clinical experiences and a robust didactic curriculum. This program is designed to provide comprehensive education, preparing the APP for a full-time role in specialty areas. The primary fellowship role will depend on the chosen specialty and may involve learning in various settings such as inpatient, OR, clinic, and ICU. APP Fellows will work towards developing clinically relevant and procedural competencies. They will be required to attend academic sessions and may complete presentations, lectures, or Quality Improvement (QI) projects as directed by the APP Fellowship Coordinator or Director. Support will be provided by the APP Best Practice Center, department APPs, mentors, and physician leaders. The APP Fellow's schedule will align with other department APPs but may include additional clinical and academic requirements. Specifically, the APP Fellow in Developmental Pediatrics will learn to provide care within a busy division that includes MD Faculty, PhD Psychologists, LISWs, and other fellows. This division operates within the Department of Pediatrics at MUSC’s Children’s Hospital, offering comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for developmental and behavioral disorders, and also runs a clinical research program in this area. Applicants are encouraged to highlight how the fellowship aligns with their career aspirations in their cover letter. Three letters of recommendation will be required prior to the interview for selected candidates.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant.
  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN.
  • Specific NP specialties accepted: FNP (Family NP), PCPNP/PNP (Primary Care Pediatric NP or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner), PMHNP (Psychiatric Mental Health NP) if educational background includes pediatric psychiatric patients.
  • No prior experience required; fellowship is geared for new graduates and experienced APPs changing specialties.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification must be current and complete prior to the start date.
  • DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to the first day, if applicable.
  • Must be eligible for licensure in the state.
  • Must be able to maintain 20/40 vision corrected, see and recognize objects close at hand and at a distance.
  • Must be able to work in a latex safe environment.
  • Must be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and as required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care to patients through comprehensive history taking and physical examinations.
  • Evaluates and treats patients based on history, physical examination, and diagnostic test results, in accordance with practice agreements or scope of practice guidelines.
  • Performs therapeutic procedures in accordance with approved procedural privileges, skill, and proficiency.
  • Initiates referrals to other healthcare providers and consults with attending or collaborating physicians.
  • Documents and bills for direct patient care provided.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice.
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Participates in accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Demonstrates professional practice through participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Attends education and academic sessions as determined by the APP Fellowship Coordinator or Director.
  • Completes presentations, lectures, QI projects, or other academic requirements set by the MUSC APP Fellowship Director or Department.
  • Participates in required MUSC APP Fellowship activities.
  • Maintains required licenses, certifications, and continuing education (CNEs/CMEs).
  • Performs directly administered developmental screening and assessment tests (e.g., Brigance Screen, Bracken Preschool Readiness Test, Oral and Written Language Assessment, Modified Peabody Screen, Test of Visual Motor Integration, CAT/CLAMS, Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test, Qb Test).
  • Completes the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) curriculum.
