About The Position

The API Academic Peer Instruction (API) is a peer program modeled after a nationally recognized Supplemental Instruction (SI) program. API has helped students succeed in their courses at LaGuardia since 1993. It is free to all students enrolled in "high-risk" API – linked courses. The program's mission is to improve students' academic performance in high-risk courses and foster independent learning to prepare students to become high-performing students in future courses. This role is for an administrative Staff to join the team to support the peers and the coordinators. The workload is 15 hours spread over 3 days (in person).

Requirements

  • Have completed a minimum of 9 credits and have a GPA of 3.0.
  • Must demonstrate proof of technology skill either through an advanced level Portfolio or Windows operating system and MS Office.
  • Must be responsible, mature, possess good communication and listening skills, good interpersonal skills, and maintain good attendance as well as punctuality.
  • Have a desire to help others learn.

Responsibilities

  • Advertise the program to the college community with the aim of identifying and recruiting new tutors.
  • Maintain and update the website for the program: www.laguardia.edu/api.
  • Prepare material and coordinate any advertising events that API will participate in within the college.
  • Manage new applications and schedule interviews.
  • Coordinate the hiring paperwork for new and returning tutors in Collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning.
  • Coordinate submission of timesheets so that tutors get paid on time.
  • In collaboration with program coordinators, design and update forms, which tutors and administrators use for planning, assessment, and management of various aspects of the program.
  • Maintain detailed records of tutors' performance and monitor their work.
  • Help tutors build and maintain a tutoring schedule & location.
  • Secure a room for each meeting before and during the semester. Help to obtain all necessary supplies and other materials needed for each meeting.
  • Observe each tutor at least once during the semester.
  • Create an email group with all tutors and send frequent reminders of important events, training meetings, and due dates.
  • Share tutoring schedules with all faculty teaching the targeted courses, including non-API sections, to improve session attendance.
  • Help tutors create email groups with their students and ensure they are used frequently. Keep a record of the number of emails send by each tutor.
  • Help the tutors design fliers and help them obtain enough copies.
  • Process all print-shop requests and distribute copies to tutors.
  • Manage supply inventory and orders. Get markers for each semester from the college.
  • Prepare new folders for all tutors before each semester, including all necessary forms.
  • Help with summarizing the data collected by tutors each semester. Obtain from the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment additional data such as student grades. Summarize all this information to be used for any interim and annual report.
  • Other duties as assigned.
