About The Position

The English / AP English Teacher provides high-quality instruction that promotes student growth in reading, writing, speaking, listening, literary analysis, and critical thinking skills. This position is responsible for creating engaging and inclusive learning environments where all students are held to high expectations and supported in taking intellectual risks. The English / AP English Teacher cultivates a strong sense of belonging for every learner, ensuring each student feels seen, valued, and capable, while guiding students through productive struggle as an essential pathway to deep learning and growth. The teacher provides instruction across English Language Arts courses, including Advanced Placement (AP) English as assigned, with an emphasis on rigorous analysis, evidence-based reasoning, academic writing, discussion, and preparation for postsecondary success.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate English Language Arts endorsement required.
AP English authorization, training, or willingness to complete required College Board/AP professional development, as applicable.
Demonstrated knowledge of effective instructional practices, classroom management, and assessment strategies.
Knowledge of English Language Arts curriculum, including literature, composition, rhetoric, literary analysis, and research-based writing.
Knowledge of instructional strategies appropriate for advanced and AP-level English coursework.
Understanding of College Board AP English course expectations and assessment practices, or the ability to develop that knowledge.
Ability to create engaging, inclusive, and appropriately rigorous learning environments.
Ability to teach students to analyze complex texts, develop evidence-based arguments, synthesize information, and communicate effectively.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
Ability to use technology to support instruction and communication.

Responsibilities

Plan, prepare, and deliver standards-based English Language Arts instruction aligned with district curriculum and Washington State Learning Standards.
Teach English Language Arts courses and, as assigned, Advanced Placement English courses.
Teach reading, writing, grammar, literature, rhetoric, speaking, listening, literary analysis, and critical thinking skills using a variety of instructional methods and materials.
Design and deliver appropriately rigorous AP English instruction that develops students' ability to analyze complex texts, construct evidence-based arguments, synthesize information, and communicate effectively in writing and discussion.
Align AP English instruction with applicable College Board course frameworks, skills, and assessment expectations.
Prepare students for AP assessments while maintaining a broader focus on college and career readiness.
Develop and implement lesson plans, assessments, and instructional activities that support student growth and achievement.
Differentiate instruction and provide accommodations and modifications to support diverse learners while maintaining appropriate academic expectations.
Establish and maintain a positive classroom culture that promotes respect, responsibility, intellectual curiosity, productive struggle, and student engagement.
Monitor and assess student learning using formative and summative assessments and provide timely, specific, and actionable feedback.
Maintain accurate and complete student records, grades, attendance, and required documentation.
Collaborate with staff, administration, counselors, and support personnel to address student academic and behavioral needs.
Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, and staff regarding student progress, academic expectations, and classroom expectations.
Participate in professional learning communities, district trainings, staff meetings, and professional development activities.
Engage in professional learning related to AP English instruction and College Board expectations as appropriate.
Supervise students in classrooms and assigned supervision areas to ensure a safe learning environment.
Integrate technology effectively into instruction and classroom management.
Maintain confidentiality regarding students, staff, and district information.
Perform other duties as assigned.
