About The Position

Southern California Alcohol and Drug Programs, Inc. (SCADP) is a non-profit organization established in 1972, providing residential treatment, outpatient counseling, housing, and supportive services to individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) and survivors of domestic violence in Los Angeles. The AOD Support Staff II Registered - MC, while in training to become an AOD counselor, provides services to beneficiaries in treatment, monitors program premises for safety and security, participates in group counseling and crisis management, and accumulates necessary work hours and education for certification. This role involves monitoring clients' self-administration of medication, understanding withdrawal symptoms, and assisting in crisis situations under supervision. The position requires meeting annual registration renewal requirements until certification is earned.

Requirements

  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance, background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedule especially during the evenings and weekends as required.
  • Ability to perform under circumstances of possible emotional stress and conflicts dealing with difficult, uncooperative, and potentially aggressive clients.
  • Registered and in good standing in an Alcohol and Drug Counseling Certification program by an approved accrediting organization (CCAPP, CADTP or CADEE).
  • Completed statutory AOD coursework requirements.
  • Completed modules 1 and 2 of ASAM within 2 weeks of hire.
  • 1 year of experience in mental health or substance abuse treatment.

Nice To Haves

  • AA or higher degree in related field.
  • Experience with Electronic Health Records (EHR).
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish and English (written and verbal).
  • Understanding of harm reduction (non-abstinence) approach with participant substance use.
  • Willing to work with substance abuse clients, that may have mental health, LGBTQ and/or HIV/AIDS concerns.

Responsibilities

  • Learn alcohol and drug counseling functions including screening, assessment, and intake under the guidance of a Certified AOD Counselor.
  • Collect specimens from clients for drug and alcohol screening in accordance with organization Policy and Procedures.
  • Collaborate with case manager and therapist to assist with treatment and other plans.
  • Assist in required intervention and participate in group and educational sessions.
  • Complete discharge and transition plans and required Electronic Health Records (EHR).
  • Monitor client self-administration of prescribed medication, keep required treatment records and shift reports.
  • Transport program participants in the company vehicle to offsite appointments, as needed.
  • Monitor the facility entrance to permit only authorized persons entry, guarding against theft and maintaining security.
  • Record participant entry and exit as required by program rules.
  • Search all participants' belongings and screen persons entering the Program, monitoring for signs of substance use or contraband.
  • Monitor premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security by walking the floor and monitoring surroundings.
  • Observe Program premises to ensure safe operations, report and correct any spills, unsafe working conditions, or defective equipment.
  • Know the location of fire exits and be prepared to assist participants in case of any emergency.
  • Monitor clients and conduct room checks, maintain records of client compliance with program rules, and report to clinical/case management staff.
  • Call Police or Fire Department in cases of emergency.
  • Report all suspicious events to direct supervisor.
  • Complete written reports and incidents logs of daily activities and irregularities.
  • Act as a role model for participants at all times, practicing professionalism and prioritizing client needs.
  • Answer telephones and take messages for clients and staff, monitor doors and greet visitors.
  • Maintain office housekeeping, ensuring common areas, laundry areas, and restrooms are clean and operational.
  • Monitor and record client self-administration of medication in accordance with organization Policies and Procedures.
  • Assist Program staff during provision of services to clients/participants, including meal preparation/serving, and set-up for classes, meetings, recreation, and other Program events.
  • Input required data to computer systems and logs (EHR and other databases as required).
  • Perform other duties that may arise to support the Program mission and goals.
  • Provide services on-site each day of active employment.
  • Provide one-on-one mentoring, support, assistance, and advocacy.
  • Act as a Mandated Reporter, reporting any instance of physical or sexual abuse to proper authorities.
