About The Position

The Animal Technician supports laboratory research programs by providing daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals, including rodents. The role is responsible for animal husbandry, sanitation of animal housing areas, equipment maintenance, health monitoring, and accurate record keeping in accordance with established procedures, applicable laws, and federal and state regulations. The Animal Technician will work under the direction of an Animal Resources Supervisor or assigned lead and is expected to perform duties independently or as part of a team. The technician must identify animal health or facility concerns, take appropriate corrective action when applicable, and promptly report issues to veterinary, research, or compliance personnel.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year of animal handling experience or experience operating laboratory animal sanitation equipment.
  • General knowledge of feeding, caging, housing, and space requirements for multiple species of laboratory animals used in biomedical research.
  • Knowledge of animal health monitoring and ability to recognize and report health concerns.
  • Understanding of applicable federal and other regulatory requirements governing laboratory animal care.
  • Knowledge of disinfection, sanitation, and cleaning agents.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate cage washers and autoclaves.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate, legible records.
  • Ability to communicate animal health information clearly to appropriate personnel.
  • Basic computer and email skills.
  • Ability to scan cage barcodes and use electronic systems for health surveillance reporting.
  • Ability to complete online training and electronic timesheet submissions.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to follow established work rules and animal facility procedures.
  • Must comply with restrictions regarding eating, drinking, and smoking in designated areas and animal facilities.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including protective clothing, safety glasses, safety shoes, gloves, face masks, and respirators when assigned.

  • Completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification level

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals.
  • Perform animal husbandry activities, including feeding, watering, and cage maintenance.
  • Change animal cages and racks according to established procedures.
  • Maintain clean, sanitary, and appropriately maintained animal housing areas.
  • Operate cage washers and autoclaves for cleaning and sterilization of cages and equipment.
  • Monitor animal health and identify potential health concerns.
  • Communicate animal health observations to appropriate veterinary, research, and compliance personnel.
  • Maintain accurate and legible animal care and facility records.
  • Complete per-diem records, animal health surveillance records, feed logs, temperature/humidity charts, and animal receipt and disposition logs.
  • Perform animal receipt, transfer, and disposition activities as assigned.
  • Maintain equipment and animal housing areas in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Follow applicable federal, state, institutional, and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform technical procedures as required to support laboratory animal care and research activities.
  • Identify problems and promptly remedy or report them to the appropriate personnel.
  • Complete required computer-based documentation, email communications, training, and timesheet activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
