Job No: 559117; 06/09/2026 ANIMAL TECHNICIAN Instructional Support Assistant I Graduate Studies Research/Animal Care Salary Range : $3,461 - $4,847/Monthly (Expected Salary: $3,461/Monthly) Work Schedule : Part-Time (20 hours/week). Days and time TBD; weekend, evening, or holiday shift as needed or as assigned; temporary appointment expires on or before one year from date of hire, may be extended, may become permanent; non-exempt classification.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to six months of experience performing support services for an instructional program and involving such activities as preparing, producing, dispensing or storing materials, supplies, and equipment; or equivalent to one year of experience in ordering, purchasing, accounting or in office work related to technical materials, supplies or equipment or in an office which provided similar services to a technical function or unit; or equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment.
  • Knowledge of animal care and facility husbandry, ensuring ability to care for a variety of animals, including rodent, amphibian and aquatic species.
  • Knowledge of procedures and practices related to providing support services.
  • Knowledge of procedures and practices related to ordering, issue and inventory.
  • Ability to learn quickly the names, uses, and care of common types of materials, supplies, and equipment used in the instructional program to which assigned.
  • Ability to inspect materials, supplies, and equipment to determine their suitability for various uses.
  • Ability to prepare and follow schedules for providing service.
  • Ability to count and perform simple arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to read and write at a level suitable for performance on the job.
  • Good verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions that are presented in English.
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs on a regular basis and sustained physical activities such as bending, balancing, stooping, reaching and remain standing for long periods of time.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment including scrubs, shoe covers, gowns, ear plugs/muffs, face mask and eye protection.
  • Demonstrated interest and/or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
  • Must reside in the State of California.
  • Must complete a background check (including a criminal records check) satisfactorily.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine animal husbandry, custodial care for animal areas, and processes equipment.
  • Provides care for all small animal species on a daily basis in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Evaluates animal's general health, report any abnormalities to the small animal veterinary technologist or veterinarian for veterinary evaluation.
  • Performs preventive animal health care duties and administer treatments as prescribed.
  • Maintains accurate records of animal identification, veterinary treatments, animal census, facility housekeeping, and room parameters (e.g. daily temperature high and low).
  • Works on-call, weekend, evening, or holiday shift as needed or as assigned.
