About The Position

The Laboratory Animal Resource Center supports research programs by providing services associated with the care and use of laboratory animals, including rodents. This includes purchasing and receiving animals, daily care, and monitoring the health of all species. The Animal Technician is responsible for the daily care of animals in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. Care may involve various species of laboratory animals housed in multiple research facilities located throughout San Francisco. Under the direction of the Animal Resources Supervisor or assigned lead, the Animal Technician has the experience, training, and capability to perform all duties within the scope of the Assistant Animal Technician job description. Animal Technicians perform assigned duties in a manner that supports the mission of the Laboratory Animal Resource Center. Animal Technicians are expected to identify problems, remedy and report them immediately. They must ensure the proper care and use of animals and must be able to perform technical procedures required within the laboratory animal resource program or to support research activities.

Requirements

1 year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation equipment operations experience required.
Ability to communicate animal health information to appropriate personnel and maintain legible records for permanent status.
Basic computer and email skills are required.
General knowledge of feeding, caging, and space requirements for multiple species of laboratory animals used in biomedical research.
Ability to identify animal health concerns and regulatory compliance issues in assigned areas and report conditions to veterinary staff, researchers, and compliance staff.
Knowledge of disinfection, sanitation, and cleaning agents.
Knowledge and ability to use cage washers for cleaning and autoclaves for sterilization of cages.
General knowledge of federal and other licensing agencies' regulations.
Satisfactory job performance ratings throughout the probationary employment period.
Ability to follow instructions and work independently or in shared assignments with others.
Basic computer skills, including: Email and work-related communications, Scanning cage barcodes, Syncing PDAs for submitting Health Surveillance Reports electronically, Online training, HBS timesheet submission
Ability to follow work rules, including no eating or drinking in animal areas and no smoking at campus facilities.
Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to 7 hours per day.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including protective clothing, protective glasses, safety shoes, gloves, face masks as required, and a respirator if assigned.
Ability to push and pull heavy objects and safely move or lift loads up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

Completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification of the AALAS

Responsibilities

Changing cages and racks
Delivering food and water according to established procedures
Maintaining equipment and animal housing areas according to standard operating procedures and federal and state regulations
Performing record-keeping duties such as per-diems records, animal health surveillance, feed logs, temperature/humidity charts, and animal receipt and disposition logs
Performing other duties as assigned
