About The Position

The Baker Institute for Animal Health at Cornell University is seeking an Animal Tech III to manage the daily care of a herd of 16 horses. This is a temporary part-time position, working up to 19 hours per week with seasonal variability. The role involves independent management of horse care, monitoring health and behavior, procurement of supplies, assisting with treatments, training staff, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The position also requires operating vehicles for transportation of horses and supplies, and working weekends, holidays, and evenings as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of related horse experience or equivalent combination
  • Must have experience handling and managing horses
  • Ability to implement biosecurity measures and knowledge of zoonotic disease concerns
  • Must have a valid driver's license with ability to operate a truck/trailer and tractor equipment
  • Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position including but not limited to lifting more than 50 pounds repetitively

Nice To Haves

  • Degree or coursework in Animal Science or related field
  • Experience managing horses in a formal/research setting
  • ALAT Certification
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and IACUC regulations

Responsibilities

  • Independently manage daily care of 12-20 horses including feeding, cleaning, watering and record keeping
  • Monitor animal health and behavior, reporting concerns and coordinating veterinary care and treatments as needed
  • Procurement of feed, hay, and horse equipment
  • Assist with medication administration
  • Train and supervise student and other employees on equine care and facility maintenance
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State and IACUC regulations through proper record keeping and facility management
  • Operate trucks with trailers for horse transportation and tractors for hay/bedding transport
  • Work weekends, holidays and evenings as assigned
