About The Position

This internship supports the Special Programs Manager and Program Coordinators in the daily operations of multiple animal-focused initiatives. The intern will assist in developing, implementing, and organizing programs that serve the shelter’s animal population. Responsibilities include coordinating daily tasks, engaging with the community, supporting communications and outreach efforts, assisting with adoption and foster program activities, and contributing to program outreach and efficiency. Ideal candidates have a strong interest in community engagement, event coordination, and volunteerism. Applicants should be comfortable in a fast-paced environment and passionate about assisting underserved populations and their pets. The position primarily follows a Tuesday–Saturday schedule, with flexible hours to accommodate academic commitments. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor OR Graduate program.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor OR Graduate program.
  • Knowledge of event planning principles, practices, and logistics management.
  • Knowledge of basic record-keeping procedures and documentation standards.
  • Knowledge of computer applications and software relevant to program coordination.
  • Knowledge of animal breeds, temperaments, and best practices for matching animals with adopters.
  • Knowledge of proper handling, restraint, and confinement techniques, along with occupational safety protocols when working with animals.
  • Skills and Abilities to perform duties in a manner that encourages contributions and business for Animal Services.
  • Skills and Abilities to research different marketing, outreach, and promotional concepts in use by other national and regional animal welfare organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Supports programs that promote adoptable animals and increase awareness of shelter services, including assisting with social media content, marketing materials, and promotional outreach.
  • Assists in planning, implementing, tracking, and reporting shelter and adoption awareness programs, including initiatives that support adoption and foster placement efforts.
  • Helps facilitate community education on responsible pet ownership, including training sessions and speaking engagements, and community outreach initiatives.
  • Coordinates and assists with events, volunteer activities, adoption and foster program activities, donations, and special initiatives.
  • Develops and strengthens partnerships with businesses, libraries, community centers, public housing complexes, faith-based organizations, internal departments, and other stakeholders.
  • Aids in event coordination, including staffing logistics, volunteer management, and supporting outreach efforts to secure in-kind donations and community partnerships for events and programs.
