About The Position

The San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District is seeking motivated individuals for the Animal Services Dispatcher I - Per Diem position. This role supports the district's commitment to high-level community service through innovation, training, and technology. The position involves receiving and processing emergency and non-emergency calls related to animal services, dispatching Animal Services Officers, providing public assistance, and performing related duties. This entry-level classification operates within the Communications Center, gathering information, dispatching calls, and assisting the public and other agencies regarding animal services and shelter operations. It is distinct from a Public Safety Dispatcher as it does not dispatch law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical resources. Employment is contingent upon the contract between the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and the Contra Costa County Animal Services Department.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or a high school proficiency certificate.
  • Current Communication Reserve OR At least six (6) months of experience in animal services field or in a customer service, dispatch, call center, or clerical position responsible for receiving, evaluating, and responding to inquiries or complaints.
  • Knowledge of the geography of Contra Costa County, including city boundaries and surrounding areas.
  • Knowledge of current technology and communications systems used in the profession (computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, VESTA 911 telephone system, Microsoft Teams phone system, and Motorola Solutions radio communications systems).
  • Knowledge of District customer service standards and objectives.
  • Ability to obtain, evaluate, and communicate information accurately and effectively with members of the public, law enforcement personnel, and other agencies.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply ordinances, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to operate multi-line telephone systems, computer applications, radio systems, and other communications equipment.
  • Ability to accurately document information while handling multiple tasks and high-priority situations.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and logs.
  • Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective during stressful or emotionally charged situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds using tact, diplomacy, and professionalism.
  • Ability to treat coworkers, outside agencies, and members of the public with courtesy and respect.
  • Ability to assess customer needs and provide appropriate assistance or referrals.
  • Ability to deliver prompt, efficient, and responsive customer service.

  • Employment in this position is contingent upon the contract between the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and the Contra Costa County Animal Services Department. Changes to the contract may affect continued employment in this classification.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and process emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public, law enforcement agencies, and other organizations regarding animal services, animal cruelty investigations, animal control matters, regulatory issues, and shelter operations.
  • Gather information from callers, assess the nature of the call, determine the appropriate response, and take or coordinate appropriate action.
  • Apply applicable state and local animal control laws, regulations, policies, and procedures when handling calls and dispatching resources.
  • Operate multi-line telephone systems, computer applications, radio systems, and other communications equipment to support field operations.
  • Monitor the location and status of Animal Services Officers, dispatch calls for service, coordinate backup assistance when needed, and support officer safety.
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and documentation.
  • Provide courteous, professional, and responsive customer service by assisting the public directly or making appropriate referrals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
