About The Position
Global Technology and Innovation (GTI) advances the science and technology capabilities that support Medtronic's mission and product development efforts. Within GTI, the Preclinical Research Laboratory (PRL) conducts preclinical surgical research and laboratory operations that support the evaluation and advancement of medical technologies. The team collaborates with research, veterinary, and operational partners to execute studies while maintaining quality, regulatory, and animal welfare standards. This position is based onsite in Coon Rapids, Minnesota (11520 Yellow Pine St NW) and requires hands-on participation in laboratory and surgical environments. Scheduled weekend, holiday, and after-hours coverage is required as part of departmental operations. Travel is not anticipated for this role. As an Animal Research Technician IV, you will serve as an advanced technical resource supporting preclinical research studies through anesthesia management, surgical support, laboratory operations, and study execution. This role contributes to study success through technical expertise, operational support, training of team members, and adherence to quality and regulatory requirements.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent and 5+ years of experience supporting laboratory, surgical, veterinary, animal research, healthcare, or related technical operations.
- Experience supporting anesthesia administration, surgical procedures, or procedural environments operating under regulated processes and documented protocols.
- Experience operating medical, laboratory, imaging, anesthesia, monitoring, or other specialized technical equipment.
- Ability to work onsite in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, including scheduled weekend, holiday, and after-hours coverage.
- Experience training, mentoring, or supporting the development of technical personnel using standardized procedures and work instructions.
Nice To Haves
- Experience supporting preclinical research studies involving large animal models.
- Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) requirements.
- Experience serving as an operating room circulator, scrub technician, anesthesia technician, surgical first assistant, or in a comparable procedural support role.
- Experience using fluoroscopy, computed radiography, Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), or related imaging technologies.
- Certification or specialized training in veterinary technology, surgical technology, anesthesia technology, laboratory animal science, or a related technical discipline.
- For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.
Responsibilities
- Perform advanced anesthesia support activities, including pre-operative assessments, anesthesia induction, intubation, physiologic monitoring, recovery support, vascular access placement, blood collection, and protocol-directed euthanasia procedures.
- Support preclinical surgical procedures by serving in circulator and scrub technician roles, maintaining sterile technique, managing instrumentation, collecting procedural data, and assisting with study activities.
- Operate and maintain specialized laboratory and surgical equipment, including fluoroscopy, computed radiography, anesthesia monitoring systems, and infusion devices.
- Prepare, sterilize, package, distribute, and maintain surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies to support procedural readiness and laboratory operations.
- Maintain compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and internal procedures.
- Train and mentor employees through established on-the-job training programs and support onboarding and technical development activities.
- Support laboratory operations through documentation, data entry, inventory monitoring, controlled substance handling, housekeeping, and protocol-related activities.
- Participate in safety initiatives, quality improvement efforts, protocol reviews, and cross-functional operational projects.
