About The Position

Battelle is seeking an Animal Laboratory Technician for a full-time opportunity in Columbus, Ohio. This role supports toxicology and chemistry laboratory activities evaluating medical countermeasures for highly toxic materials and infectious organisms using animal research models. The position requires consistent maintenance of high levels of safety and accuracy within Battelle's Biomedical Research Center, which houses over 200 scientific staff with expertise in various biomedical fields and includes high-containment environments such as a highly toxic material test facility and Biosafety Level 1, 2, and 3 laboratories.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or higher in biology, animal science, or a related life science field; OR a high school diploma with a minimum of 2 years of equivalent laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge sufficient to perform routine assignments, operate basic equipment, follow standard procedures, and perform routine data analysis
  • High degree of manual dexterity and the ability to work while wearing a respirator
  • Ability to frequently bend and stoop; must be able to lift 50 lbs. to waist level and 25 lbs. to shoulder level; must be able to remain on feet for the majority of the work shift
  • Must be willing to work in a Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) and/or Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) biocontainment environment and wear appropriate respiratory protection
  • Must be willing to be immunized with FDA-licensed vaccines and Investigational New Drugs (INDs) recommended for individuals at occupational risk of exposure to biological agents
  • Ability to obtain and maintain enrollment in applicable personnel reliability programs (NACLC); enrollment requires the ability to pass commercial and/or federal background investigations
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval and CDC approval to work with BSAT material
  • Must be willing to participate in random drug screening
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

Responsibilities

  • Performing routine laboratory procedures with a high degree of accuracy, including the collection, recording, analysis, documentation, and reporting of results
  • Working with hazardous materials in a controlled environment while maintaining strict safety standards and procedures
  • Learning and refining new laboratory skills and techniques to support evolving research needs
  • Maintaining thorough written and verbal communication with supervisors, study directors, and coworkers
  • Understanding and following all relevant SOPs, facility guidelines, and security protocols
  • Supporting the sanitization, repair, and maintenance of caging, carts, and other laboratory equipment
  • Regularly cleaning and maintaining laboratory facilities and equipment
  • Assisting in the disposal and removal of waste from the facility
  • Maintaining excellent attendance and punctuality across all assigned projects
