About The Position

We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Animal Intake Technician to join our team and serve as one of the first points of care for animals entering our shelter. The Animal Intake Technician plays a critical role in ensuring animals entering the shelter receive thorough health and behavior assessments, compassionate handling, and appropriate care planning from the moment they arrive. This position works closely with medical, behavior, and shelter teams to support positive outcomes for animals while helping maintain a safe and supportive environment for staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community.

Requirements

  • Compassionate, detail-oriented, adaptable, and committed to providing exceptional care for animals and people alike.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast-paced, emotionally demanding environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and data entry systems
  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, bending, and animal handling
  • Ability to lift and move 25–40 pounds
  • Safe handling of animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions
  • Exposure to animal allergens, zoonotic diseases, cleaning chemicals, noise, and varying weather conditions
  • Use of animal restraint equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working or volunteering in animal welfare, veterinary medicine, zoological settings, or other animal care environments
  • Knowledge of animal behavior, positive reinforcement, and temperament assessment
  • Understanding of basic veterinary care and animal health

Responsibilities

  • Conducting intake and follow-up exams, including vaccines, microchip implantation, weight checks, and health monitoring
  • Identifying medical or behavioral concerns and communicating findings to the medical team
  • Assessing animal temperament using objective, nonbiased observations
  • Making informed routing decisions based on health, behavior, and shelter needs
  • Assisting with animal movement throughout the shelter
  • Maintaining accurate documentation and records
  • Maintaining and restocking equipment and supplies
  • Participating in occasional overnight on-call emergency animal transport
  • Collaborating with staff, volunteers, and multiple departments to support daily shelter operations
  • Representing HSPPR professionally while promoting our mission and lifesaving work within the community
