About The Position

Bering-Alaka`ina Holdings, LLC is seeking an Animal Husbandry Technician II to support a government customer at the US Army Institute for Surgical Research (USAISR), JBSA Fort Sam Houston, Texas. This role involves performing essential daily animal husbandry duties for both small and large animals to ensure their health and adherence to sanitation protocols. The technician will also be responsible for preparing orders for animal supplies and equipment, operating cage wash equipment, performing animal census, conducting health observations, and documenting all procedures accurately.

Requirements

  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be able to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI)
  • At least two to four (2-4) years’ laboratory experience is desired
  • Experience providing animal husbandry technical support in a DoD environment is preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification is preferred
  • Laboratory Animal Laboratory Technician (LAT) certification is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Perform animal husbandry duties for small and large animals including rats, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, swine, sheep, and goats.
  • Prepare and change/clean animal cages and related accessories, feed animals, and monitor watering devices.
  • Follow approved procedures for animal holding and procedure rooms, including those in Animal Biosafety Level (ABSL) II.
  • Operate cage wash equipment according to internal SOPs.
  • Prepare caging, transport containers/carts, and related equipment for cage washing.
  • Perform animal census and report findings on the internal USAISR Animal Census Form.
  • Conduct animal health observations and immediately report any abnormal conditions or behavior to the Veterinarian, Vivarium Manager, Assistant Vivarium Manager, and/or Surgery Manager.
  • Complete husbandry-related logbooks, checklists, and other records accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Perform animal care and environmental enrichment activities as prescribed in local SOPs, including preparing food, toys, and other enrichment items.
  • Prepare orders for animal supplies and equipment.
  • Prepare and distribute produce, enrichment feed, and environmental enrichment devices.
  • Track animal, feed, enrichment, and supplies to account for spoilage and wastage.
  • Conduct weekly inventory on all enrichment items/feed and submit reports to the Vivarium Manager.
  • Document husbandry procedures and enrichment distribution.
