About The Position
The Caldwell Zoo is seeking highly motivated, hard-working, professional minded students who want to take advantage of educational opportunities to gain on-job experience in the zoological career field. Fall 2026 paid internships are available at Caldwell Zoo in Tyler, Texas in the areas of Animal Husbandry. Available departments include Mammals 1, Mammals 2, Birds, and Reptiles.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be a sophomore in college or have a higher classification
- Overall GPA must be 2.5 or higher
- Must pass a background check and have a negative TB Test
Responsibilities
- Safe methods of exotic animal handling and restraint
- Animal behavior, husbandry, and record keeping
- Animal nutrition, to include preparing and distributing animal diets
- Preventative medicine and disease treatment
- Water quality testing and water changes
- Cleaning animal enclosures
- Visitor relations
- Emergency procedures and protocols
- Watch animal medical procedures
- Attend a Veterinary Department meeting
- Assist keepers with daily projects
- Shadow up to five other departments
