About The Position

The Animal Facility Veterinarian will be responsible for providing veterinary services and participating in the ACUC to support the VRC's research activities at NIAID within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The services include, but are not limited to, clinical veterinary care, oversight of animal welfare, and compliance with regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in Biology, Zoology, or similar from accredited institution
  • Current licensure to practice veterinary medicine from a U.S. State Board certification or eligibility in laboratory animal medicine (ACLAM)
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional regulations and guidelines for animal care and use
  • Minimum of three years of experience in laboratory animal medicine
  • Skilled in Microsoft Suite Products
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide routine and emergency veterinary care for laboratory animals in the TRP vivarium, primarily mice and guinea pigs.
  • Conduct regular health assessments and preventive care programs for all laboratory animals
  • Diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries laboratory animals
  • Perform surgical procedures on facility animals, as needed, (spa and neuter, hernia repair, growth removals, dental extractions, etc.). Provide post operative care of all animals. Perform euthanizations as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records, including those recorded in the facility database (including treatments, examinations, test results, surgeries and outcomes) and other records required by local and state laws.
  • Ensures facility compliance with federal, state, local and departmental laws, regulations and guidelines.
  • Develop and implement animal care protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and institutional regulations and guidelines
  • Provide training and guidance to research staff on proper animal handling, care, and use
  • Serve as a voting member of the VRC ACUC
  • Review and evaluate animal use protocols to ensure ethical and humane treatment of animals
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to animal care and use
  • Monitor the experiment conditions and make recommendations to researchers on appropriate care and treatment of experiment animals.
  • Reports summarizing veterinary services provided, including health assessments, treatments, and surgeries performed
  • Documentation of compliance with animal care protocols and regulatory standards
  • Written evaluations and recommendations for animal use protocols reviewed by the ACUC
  • Attendance and participation in all scheduled ACUC meetings and inspections
  • Training materials and records for research staff on animal care and use
  • Meet with lab members to present updates
