About The Position

The Large Animal Veterinarian is a full-time, non-tenure track position reporting to the Attending Veterinarian. Responsibilities include providing veterinary care and clinical oversight to large agricultural animal species in both biomedical and farm settings; serving on an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee; assisting faculty and research staff with development of animal models and animal use protocol applications; assisting in the training programs for research staff, animal care staff, and veterinary staff; assisting units in maintaining AAALAC accreditation; supplying research and animal care staff technical guidance in the care and use of large agricultural animals in research; providing surgical and postoperative care to large research animals. Primary duties are caring for animals in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences program.

Requirements

  • DVM or VMD is required.
  • Must be able to be licensed in one state.
  • Must be able to obtain clearance to work with select agents.
  • The desirable candidate will have experience with the operations and health management of large animal facilities, including farm settings.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Formal training and/or experience working with agricultural animals in a research setting is preferred.
  • Board certification in the following specialties are preferred: American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large Animal Medicine), American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Beef Cattle Practice, Dairy Practice, Food Animal Practice, Swine Health Management), or other agricultural animal specialties.
  • Board eligibility or certification in laboratory animal specialty is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development and review of protocols, operating policies and procedures, and grant applications as needed
  • Documents medical procedures and activity, disseminates information, and makes medical recommendations based on results
  • Develops and facilitates trainings, educational courses, and affiliated materials to staff and students on animal care methodologies and processes
  • Serves as a subject matter expert, consultant, and unit liaison to internal and external stakeholders and leadership regarding research protocols
  • Designs and implements animal care programs of preventive medicine for designated individual animals and colonies
  • Conducts physical exams, diagnoses medical conditions, treats injuries and diseases, and provides surgical and post-operative care for animals in various environments
