About The Position

We are currently searching for an Animal Facility Veterinarian to provide veterinary services and participate in the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) to support the Vaccine Research Center’s (VRC's) research activities. The services include, but are not limited to, clinical veterinary care, oversight of animal welfare, and compliance with regulatory standards. This is a full-time, on-site opportunity in Bethesda, MD.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine (DVM).
  • Board certification or eligibility in laboratory animal medicine (ACLAM).
  • Current licensure to practice veterinary medicine from a U.S. State.
  • Minimum EIGHT (8) years of experience in laboratory animal medicine; Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine (DVM) in lieu of FOUR (4) years of experience.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional regulations and guidelines for animal care and use.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD "public trust"; candidates must obtain approved adjudication of their public trust prior to onboarding with Guidehouse. Candidates with an active public trust or suitability are preferred

  • Knowledgeable in MS Office Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Provide routine and emergency veterinary care for laboratory animals in the Translational Research Program (TRP) vivarium (animal facility), primarily mice and guinea pigs.
  • Conduct regular health assessments and preventive care programs for all laboratory animals.
  • Serve as a voting member of the VRC ACUC.
  • Diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries in laboratory animals
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records, including those recorded in the facility database (including treatments, examinations, test results, surgeries and outcomes) and other records required by local and state laws
  • Perform surgical procedures on facility animals, as needed, such as spay and neuter, hernia repair, growth removals, dental extractions, etc.
  • Provide post-operative care for all animals.
  • Perform euthanizations as necessary.
  • Develop and implement animal care protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and institutional regulations and guidelines.
  • Provide training and guidance to research staff on proper animal handling, care, and use.
  • Review and evaluate animal use protocols to ensure ethical and humane treatment of animals.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to animal care and use.
  • Monitor the experiment conditions and make recommendations to researchers on appropriate care and treatment of experiment animals.
