Axle is seeking a Animal Facility Veterinarian to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) located in Bethesda, MD. The veterinarian will be responsible for providing veterinary services and participating in the ACUC to support the VRC's research activities. The services include, but are not limited to, clinical veterinary care, oversight of animal welfare, and compliance with regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Board certification or eligibility in laboratory animal medicine (ACLAM)
  • Current licensure to practice veterinary medicine from a U.S. State
  • DVM degree from an accredited institution
  • Field of Study Biology Zoology
  • Use of Microsoft Suite products
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional regulations and guidelines for animal care and use
  • Minimum of three years of experience in laboratory animal medicine

Responsibilities

  • Provide routine and emergency veterinary care for laboratory animals in the TRP vivarium, primarily mice and guinea pigs.
  • Conduct regular health assessments and preventive care programs for all laboratory animals.
  • Serve as a voting member of the VRC ACUC.
  • Diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries in laboratory animals.
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records, including those recorded in the facility database (including treatments, examinations, test results, surgeries and outcomes) and other records required by local and state laws.
  • Provides routine medical care to research colonies.
  • Perform animal surgeries.
  • Perform surgical procedures on facility animals, as needed, (spay and neuter, hernia repair, growth removals, dental extractions, etc.).
  • Provide post operative care of all animals.
  • Perform euthanizations as necessary.
  • Maintains accurate records and updates databases.
  • Ensures facility compliance with federal, state, local and departmental laws, regulations and guidelines.
  • Develop and implement animal care protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and institutional regulations and guidelines.
  • Provide training and guidance to research staff on proper animal handling, care, and use.
  • Review and evaluate animal use protocols to ensure ethical and humane treatment of animals.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to animal care and use.
  • Participates in small animal and non-human primate experiments.
  • Monitor the experiment conditions and make recommendations to researchers on appropriate care and treatment of experiment animals.
