The Opportunity We are seeking an experienced Laboratory Animal Veterinarian to join the Animal Resources department and expand our team. Our mission is to provide excellent service and support for Genentech’s Research and Early Development (gRED) in vivo research program. We collaborate with and provide expert support to our research scientists in the discovery, characterization, and development of novel therapeutic products for a variety of human diseases. Requirements

  • You hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM, VMD, or equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited or recognized school of veterinary medicine.
  • You must have the ability to obtain a veterinary medical license in California within 6 months of hire.
  • This position is located in South San Francisco, but willingness to collaborate across time zones and occasional travel to the Dixon facility is a must.
  • Occasional travel to the San Diego facility will be expected.

  • You possess strong interpersonal skills and enjoy communicating effectively with colleagues in extremely diverse fields.

  • You have extensive experience providing excellent preventative, clinical, diagnostic, and surgical care to a diverse, dynamic, AAALACi accredited animal research institution.
  • You have experience working with transgenic rodents and providing technical support to biomedical research projects.
  • You have experience in leading and working well within a team.

  • ACLAM board certification is strongly preferred, but eligibility is required.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure animal well-being by providing and prescribing preventive medical care, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Conduct surgical, diagnostic, and other procedures, and interpret results of diagnostic testing.
  • Provide expert veterinary support for anesthesia, analgesia, surgery, and necropsy.
  • Participate in weekend onsite rotation as well as share after-hours and holiday veterinary service coverage with other veterinary staff.
  • Perform regular facility rounds to monitor animal health and facility conditions.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for the IACUC, including protocol review, facility inspections, and Post-Approval Monitoring (PAMs).
  • Maintain deep knowledge of all research protocols to ensure compliance and animal welfare.
  • Initiate, author, and implement appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and procedural documents relevant to clinical care, behavioral management, and responsible animal use.
  • Interact collaboratively with the Attending Veterinarian and Senior Clinical Veterinarian, senior management, Animal Care, Veterinary Staff, and research teams regarding animal welfare and responsible conduct of research activities, including the development and enforcement of humane endpoints.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as institutional standards.
  • Lead or collaborate in the training and retraining of research personnel and veterinary technical staff, specifically in anesthesia, surgery, and other animal use activities.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to veterinary technicians and research teams in the performance of delegated veterinary care activities.
  • Collaborate closely with Principal Investigators, veterinarians, facility managers, and animal care technicians in a widely interdisciplinary environment.
