About The Position

Lyon County is seeking an Animal Control Officer to join their team. This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Animal Control Officers (ACO) will provide general Animal Control Services throughout the County by responding to requests for service from citizens through dispatch, patrolling the unincorporated areas of the county looking for problems, and providing educational information to the public on related topics. They will enforce Kansas Statutes and County Resolutions applicable to the position and appear in Court as required. The ACO will be responsible for any other tasks assigned by their supervisor to promote public safety. The roles, responsibilities, job functions, knowledge, skills and abilities set forth herein may be revised from time-to-time in order to comply with federal and state laws, departmental needs and the changing requirements for this position.

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age and engender sufficient faith and confidence in the Sheriff to merit appointment as an Animal Control Officer.
Must have and maintain a valid Kansas CLASS C driver's license.
Must have the immunizations scheduled by the Kansas Dept. of Health & Environment for Animal Control Officers.
Must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently.
Must possess sufficient visual acuity to read and write and operate office equipment.
Requires sufficient hearing capability to be able to deal effectively with the public and others directly or via telephone or radio equipment.
Must be willing to respond to call out situations and schedule changes subject to short notice.
Must be able to spend lengthy periods in a vehicle, subject to working in all weather conditions with occasional extended periods of exposure to inclement weather.
Must be able to successfully complete the County employment application.
Must pass pre-employment tests including a background check, physical, drug screening, work screen and polygraph examination.
Participates in the random drug and alcohol screening program.

Responsibilities

Respond to citizen reports or complaints on animal control related situations.
Patrol the unincorporated areas of the county and contracted cities to collect strayed, injured, or diseased animals.
Impound animals to be quarantined as prescribed by law.
Professionally investigate complaints of Animal Cruelty and/or Animals Running at Large.
Legibly prepare office reports and other documentation completely, accurately, and in a timely manner.
Respond to requests for assistance from other Animal Control Officers when requested.
Maintain office issued or assigned equipment, scheduling repairs and or replacements in consultation with the Undersheriff.
Pass on to other ACOs and Deputies the skills and information you have that will assist them in the professional performance of their duties; either informally or at shift change briefings or in formal training sessions.
Recognize and report any violations of State statutes, county or Sheriff's Office policies and procedures observed to an appropriate authority.
Take advantage of every opportunity to enhance professional knowledge and skills by attending training, studying on your own and learning from others with specialized skill and expertise as the opportunities arise.
Show up for work on a regular and predictable basis as scheduled.
Attend training as opportunities are identified by the Sheriff or designee, or by the ACO and approved by the Sheriff.
On intermittent occasions, independently expend budgeted funds for vehicle maintenance, supplies, and travel expenses.
Demonstrate consistent interpersonal skills enabling professional relations with the public, and other county and office employees.
When necessary, take animals to a vet for euthanasia or humanely put down injured animals in the field.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Sheriff or designee.
