About The Position

Join our team! We are looking for an Animal Control Officer. This position involves patrolling the city, responding to calls for service, and enforcing city, county, and state laws related to animal control. The role requires investigating animal-related activities, enforcing ordinances, maintaining databases, and responding to public complaints. It also includes investigating cruelty cases, humanely euthanizing animals, communicating with the public and other personnel, and responding to after-hour emergencies. The officer will safely pursue and capture aggressive animals, assist other departments, and enforce public safety regarding Zoonosis Control (Rabies), including bite reports and testing. The position requires writing and maintaining reports, filing paperwork independently, and performing other assigned duties. Employees may be subject to 24-hour recall and required to work overtime, including during emergency situations or evacuations, to provide essential services.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Two (2) years of related experience in assigned area of responsibility
  • Valid Texas Driver's License
  • Animal Control Officer Certification
  • Applicable Certifications for Euthanizing and Tranquilizing Animals
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations and/or ordinances
  • Knowledge of basic inspection principles, practices, and procedures
  • Knowledge of code enforcement techniques
  • Knowledge of customer service principles
  • Knowledge of safety principles and safe work practices
  • Knowledge of specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment
  • Knowledge of modern office technology and equipment
  • Ability to prepare reports, logs, and activity documentation

Responsibilities

  • Patrol the city in a radio-equipped vehicle, answer calls for service and enforce city, county, and state laws.
  • Look for stray animals and conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations on all animal-related activities.
  • Enforce laws and ordinances involving Animal Control regulations, including issuing citations and testifying in court.
  • Maintain the website and database by updating animal information and photographs accurately.
  • Respond to complaints regarding Animal Control and follow procedures to alleviate nuisance issues safely.
  • Investigate cruelty cases by following proper procedure and legal actions, including seizures, reports, and court hearings.
  • Euthanize animals humanely by following proper protocol and health requirements.
  • Communicate with the public and other personnel on a daily basis in a professional and informative manner.
  • Respond to after-hour emergency calls on a regular basis.
  • Safely pursue and capture aggressive and dangerous animals by following procedure daily.
  • Assist other departments with Animal Control issues.
  • Enforce the safety of the public regarding Zoonosis Control (Rabies), including bite reports, quarantine, and testing.
  • Write and maintain proper reports and compliance letters regarding Animal Control.
  • File, organize, and distribute paperwork independently.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the department by performing other essential duties as assigned.
  • Subject to 24-hour recall and required to work overtime, including during emergency situations.
