About The Position

This role is responsible for protecting animals and ensuring the safety of the Fort Wayne community. The Animal Control Officer will respond to public and animal safety calls, investigate incidents, and enforce City and State regulations. Responsibilities include handling, evaluating, and providing care for animals, which may involve vaccinations, treatment, and humane euthanasia. The position also requires maintaining accurate records, processing intakes and redemptions, and coordinating with partnering agencies and law enforcement. Additionally, the role involves conducting inspections, educating the public, and performing public speaking engagements. On-call duties and safe operation of City vehicles are also required.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Animal Science, or equivalent experience
  • 1–5 years in animal control or law enforcement
  • Ability to safely handle animals, read behavior, and enforce ordinances
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and computer/database skills
