About The Position

The primary duty of this role is to enforce the City of Florence Animal Control Ordinances. This involves impounding dogs running at large within the city limits, issuing warnings and citations to owners of violating dogs, and impounding/transporting various types of animals (unwanted, stray, sick, diseased, injured, and vicious) to the animal shelter. The position may also require assisting the Health Department with investigations and animal bites, enforcing animal cruelty laws, educating the public on animal welfare, assisting in euthanasia, and performing general cleaning and maintenance of the shelter and grounds. The officer must be able to work all hours due to emergency after-hours calls and live within 30 miles of the animal shelter.

Requirements

  • Education equivalent to completion of high school.
  • Experience in the handling of animals.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Must have and maintain a telephone.
  • Must successfully complete the animal control academy within twelve months after employment.
  • Must obtain EBI (Euthanasia by Injection) certification through the State of Alabama within 12 months of hire and maintain certification license.
  • Must obtain certification in the use of a TASER within 12 months of hire and maintain certification license.
  • Must be able to obtain TASER certification.
  • Must take rabies immunization.
  • Ability to do strenuous outside work.
  • Ability to lift 75 lbs. or more.

  • Must be able to work all hours because of nature of emergency after-hours calls.
  • Must live within 30 miles via public road of animal shelter.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates complaint calls via mobile radio, speaks to complainants, informs them of action to be taken, and takes action.
  • Impounds animals running at large, injured, sick, diseased, or cruelly treated.
  • Issues notices, warning citations, and citations to violators of city animal control ordinances.
  • Obtains warrants for violators of city and state animal laws.
  • Prepares incident and complaint reports, dog bite reports, impoundment cards, and missing animal reports.
  • Maintains a daily animal control officer's log and a controlled substance log.
  • Operates animal control vehicle, catch pole, snake control stick, animal control leash, animal transport cages, animal stretcher, dart gun, and TASER gun.
  • Places and sets live animal traps.
  • Euthanizes sick, injured, and unwanted animals.
  • Cleans and maintains animal shelter, grounds, and vehicles.
  • Performs other duties as required by Supervisor.
