About The Position

The purpose of this position is to enforce all local, federal, and state laws relating to public safety and welfare of animals. This role involves general animal control work, responding to calls for service, and maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of the animal shelter. The position operates with some procedural guidance but requires independent decision-making regarding task execution, with frequent supervision. The core function is to uphold public safety and animal welfare laws within the County, conduct vehicular patrols, engage with citizens on potential law enforcement issues, and respond to emergency service calls.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of South Carolina Code of Laws.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office.
  • Knowledge of state and county laws pertaining to animals.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word and Excel).
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of how to handle friendly and feral domesticated animals.
  • Ability to pick up from Jail and supervise 2-9 inmates at any given time.
  • Knowledge of state animal laws and county animal control ordinances.
  • Ability to catch animals that are running loose.
  • Ability to go to court and testify for cases.
  • Qualified to operate various assigned weapons.
  • Ability to work extended hours and remain on-call for duties.
  • Physical and mental abilities for law enforcement work and apprehending suspects.
  • Knowledge of County roadways and communities.
  • Customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Successful completion of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Requires a short demonstration up to and including one month of related experience.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce local animal control ordinances.
  • Interact with and serve the public in taking in animals.
  • Work the intake desk, dispatching calls to officers.
  • Vet animals to prepare them for adoption and ensure their health.
  • Determine the adoptability of animals in the shelter.
  • Ensure the shelter is clean and disease-free.
  • Respond to animal neglect and animal at large complaints.
  • Euthanize unwanted, sick, or injured animals.
  • Pick up stray animals, including setting traps.
  • Prepare cases for prosecution and provide court testimony as needed.
  • Perform general law enforcement duties, including patrolling assigned County areas, responding to public calls for assistance, maintaining order and public safety, apprehending suspects, collecting evidence, and participating in investigative operations.
  • Perform routine service duties such as assisting stranded motorists, directing traffic, and providing security and crowd control at special events.
  • Manage supplies and inventory.
  • Testify in court for felonies and misdemeanor cases.
  • Ensure proper recording of evidence collected from crime scenes.
  • Continue training throughout the year.
