Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.
  • Two years of experience in caring for farm animals or wildlife.
  • A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle in the State of California and use of a motor vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Extensive experience attending to farm animals and wildlife.
  • Experience cleaning after animals and maintaining animal health.
  • Experience in gardening and possess sufficient knowledge of gardening tools, equipment and techniques.
  • Able to withstand and effectively perform their work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions for 3-8 hours per day.
  • Exercise safety protocol when working near bystanders as they are likely to conduct their work in the presence of students, staff, and visitors.
  • Dependable team player, checking in to his/her site on time, daily, and working with the science teacher to create lesson plans and events for students and community members.
  • Superior customer service skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with vendors and nonprofit organizations in order to organize community events at the school farm/garden, and attain supplies and materials for the school farm/garden.
  • Detail oriented, adapts well to change, and can manage several projects while ensuring all projects are carried out in a safe, timely, accurate, and efficient manner.

Responsibilities

  • Attending, feeding, and watering farm animals, such as horses, pigs, sheep, goats, rabbits, turkeys, geese, ducks, tortoises, peafowls, and chickens.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting pens, stalls, and poultry coops, including floors and drinking fountains.
  • Inspecting animals for general physical condition and symptoms of disease and possibly applying simple veterinary treatment.
  • Repairing and maintaining cages and enclosures at the science site.
  • Providing information to teachers and students regarding the proper care of animals.
  • Directing the movement of visitors through animal exhibits.
