About The Position

The City of Farmington is seeking an enthusiastic, energetic, optimistic, outcome-driven, team-oriented, and customer-service focused Animal Care Technician for its Animal Shelter. This role is crucial in caring for homeless dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens in the Four Corners area and assisting in connecting them with forever families. The technician will be part of a team responsible for kennel operations, animal care, team development, and creating a safe and welcoming environment. The position is temporary and full-time, with varied days and hours, and is paid at $14.00 per hour.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to receive money and make proper change.
  • Must be able to obtain Euthanasia Certification within one year of date of hire.
  • Must be able to work around various animals without an allergic reaction.
  • Ability to cope emotionally with euthanasia.
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency.
  • Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the shelter with compassion and genuine affection for animals.
  • Highly motivated with strong communication skills and an outgoing, polite, and professional manner.
  • Team player and self-starter, able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine animal care, including providing appropriate quantities of food and water, bathing, and basic grooming.
  • Monitor animals for health, behavior, or temperament issues and report concerns to appropriate staff.
  • Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts through compassionate handling and placement of animals.
  • Assist with animal intake, evaluation, and medical treatments as directed.
  • Assist and perform euthanasia of animals by injection using humane and accepted practices.
  • Daily clean, disinfect, and maintain shelter kennels, cages, and all animal and general areas following established disease control protocols.
  • Operate laundry, cleaning, dishwashing, and other equipment.
  • Restock cleaning, feeding, and other supply areas and inform the Animal Services Manager when reordering is necessary.
  • Maintain equipment in good working condition and report the need for repair or replacement.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of the entire facility and grounds.
  • Cultivate positive customer relations through professional, courteous, and educational interactions.
  • Promote the shelter's mission, services, programs, and events.
  • Provide prompt, courteous, and excellent service to all internal and external customers.
  • Assist customers with the pet adoption process by facilitating customer/animal interactions.
  • Accurately answer customer questions and provide guidance.
  • Practice and encourage the humane treatment of animals.
  • Assist the public in determining if lost pets are in the care of the shelter.
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out departmental business.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to shelter policies and procedures.
  • Ensure a safe work environment and follow all safety guidelines.
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns.
  • Follow direction from supervisors and management.
