About The Position

This position involves providing routine and specialized animal husbandry and facility maintenance for the Mouse Breeding Core in Biomedical Research Model Services (BRMS). The BRMS Rodent Breeding Core supports research across all campus animal programs by breeding over 700 strains of mice. The role includes general animal husbandry, feeding and watering, weaning, sampling for genotyping, monitoring environments, cleaning enclosures, receiving and preparing animals for transport, restraining and handling animals, reporting sick or injured animals, and general facility maintenance. ACT positions also interact with researchers and veterinary staff. The position offers flexible hours after probation, extra hourly differential pay for weekend hours, and additional pay for AALAS certification levels. This is an onsite position with a standard schedule of Monday through Friday and every other weekend from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with one weekday off. Holiday work may be required. Applicants will be considered for Animal Care Technician I and Animal Care Technician II, with the title determined by experience and qualifications. The responsibilities listed are for the Animal Care Technician I; an Animal Care Technician II will perform tasks more independently, assist with training, and administer medications and treatments.

Requirements

  • Physical ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, squat, twist and push carts, bedding, feed bags and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Proficient computer skills, emailing, website experience, and experience using Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Continuous work eligibility in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 6 months of animal care experience.
  • Knowledge of acceptable animal husbandry procedures.
  • Familiarity with University requirements concerning Responsible Use and Care of Animals in Research and Training and the Guide to the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
  • Knowledge of animal health records maintenance and ability to perform animal health checks.
  • AALAS Certification (ALAT, LAT or LATG).

Responsibilities

  • Performing routine and specialized animal husbandry tasks and general facility maintenance for the Mouse Breeding Core.
  • General animal husbandry, feeding and watering animals, weaning, sampling for genotyping.
  • Monitoring animal room environments, cleaning primary and secondary enclosures, receiving animals, preparing animals for transport.
  • Restraining and handling animals, reporting sick and injured animals.
  • General facility maintenance and housekeeping.
  • Interacting with researchers and veterinary staff as required.
  • Inspecting and reporting equipment problems to ensure optimal and safe operation.
  • Maintaining organization of and updating records related to research procedures.
  • Inventorying, cleaning, and maintaining organization of animal holding spaces and supplies.
  • Observing animal behavior, performing basic animal care, and reporting concerns to the appropriate entities.
  • Assisting with preparing food and formulas and feeding animals according to established schedules and specifications.
  • Performing breeding and colony management.
