The Animal Care Specialist at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society’s Animal Care and Control facility provides and ensures proper care for dogs, cats, and other animals. The role supports the organization’s mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome homeless, abused, neglected, and abandoned animals, within an open-admissions shelter committed to animal rehabilitation and a low euthanasia rate. The specialist works with the animal care team and interacts with facility management, animal control officers, veterinary assistants, shelter staff, transport coordinators, volunteers, the public, and prospective adopters. The position also provides basic customer assistance and information to visitors, including donors and school groups. This is a part-time, non-exempt position. The schedule is 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on weekdays, with weekends as needed. The work takes place in a high-noise animal shelter environment with exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal waste and odors, dander, parasites, infectious diseases, bites, and scratches. The facility provides humane euthanasia. Safety procedures must be followed at all times.
