About The Position

The BC SPCA is seeking an Animal Care Attendant to care for the health and welfare of animals in the Shelter. This role also involves providing effective and courteous support to front office staff. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers’ License and driver’s abstract.
  • Demonstrated interest in all aspects of animal welfare.
  • Sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics, and common diseases.
  • Strong desire to provide excellent customer service skills: patience, professional, positive attitude, attention to detail, adaptability.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Resourceful team player who excels at building trusting relationships with colleagues, customers, and volunteers.
  • Highly motivated self-starter who takes initiative with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain a level of fitness and endurance for physically demanding tasks including heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Computer experience: Windows, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Ability to prioritize demands on time.
  • Philosophical harmony with the vision, mission, and strategic directions of the BC SPCA.

Responsibilities

  • Working collaboratively to maintain the entire physical plant in a clean, sanitary, and efficient manner on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintaining kennel runs and cat cages in a clean, sanitary, and efficient manner on an ongoing basis.
  • Treating animals humanely, compassionately, and with concern, and transmitting these values to others.
  • Providing animals with a proper diet and ensuring they feed and water properly.
  • Ensuring animals' health and well-being according to the society's animal health policy, including administering medications as specified by authorized staff.
  • Maintaining a high level of standards to portray the BC SPCA as a compassionate and caring organization to the public.
  • Willingly assisting in coordinating volunteer supporting work for the benefit of all animals.
  • Performing other duties as required to ensure the smooth operation of the shelter.
  • Working collaboratively with other shelter personnel, creating a positive and harmonious atmosphere among staff and volunteers, and enhancing team performance.
  • Assisting front office staff with telephone reception, communications, answering counter inquiries, receiving animals for surrender, adoption procedures, license and merchandise sales, and general office routines and record-keeping.
  • Performing all duties in a courteous, friendly way to clients, volunteers, and other staff to ensure the highest possible reputation for the shelter and the maintenance of community goodwill.
