About The Position

The BC SPCA is looking to fill the position of Animal Care Attendant. This role is responsible for the health and welfare of the animals in the Shelter and provides support to front office staff. The organization is dynamic and expanding, making it an exciting time to join. The ideal candidate is an energetic team player with experience in customer relations and animal husbandry, who upholds high animal care standards and is philosophically aligned with the BC SPCA's mission, vision, and values.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers’ License and driver’s abstract
  • Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare
  • Knowledge of the geography of the Branch’s warrant area and the Shelter’s warrant area
  • A sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics and more common diseases
  • Ability to work as a team player and demonstrable well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills sufficient to deal effectively with necessary front office routines
  • Excellent customer service
  • Ability to prioritize demands on time
  • Philosophical harmony with the vision, mission, and strategic directions of the BC SPCA.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively to maintain the entire physical plant in a clean, sanitary and efficient manner on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain the kennels, runs and cat cages in a clean, sanitary and efficient manner on an ongoing basis.
  • Treat the animals humanely, with compassion and concern, and transmit these values to others.
  • Provide the animals with proper diet and ensure they feed and water properly.
  • Ensure the animal’s health and well-being in accordance with the society’s animal health policy, including the administration of medications.
  • Maintain a high level of standards to portray the SPCA as a compassionate and caring organization.
  • Willingly help co-ordinate the supporting work of volunteers.
  • Perform other duties as required to ensure the smooth operation of the shelter.
  • Collaborate with other shelter personnel to create a positive and harmonious atmosphere among staff and volunteers, enhancing team performance.
  • Assist front office staff with telephone reception, communications, counter inquiries, receiving animals for surrender, adoption procedures, license and merchandise sales, general office routines, and record keeping.
  • Perform all duties in a courteous, friendly way to clients, volunteers and other staff to ensure the highest possible reputation for the shelter and the maintenance of its community goodwill.
