About The Position

Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) is seeking an upbeat and enthusiastic Animal Care and Enrichment Technician to enhance the lives of animals and people by maintaining exemplary standards of care for animals in their facility. This is a temporary position with flexible hours (0-40 hours/week) depending on availability and department needs. Requirements

  • Experience caring for animals is a must.
  • Must have good judgment skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate an attitude of consideration and courtesy to all members of the public, volunteers, and employees.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of cleaning tasks to a high standard.
  • Routine exposure to animal excrement and blood.
  • Hands-on work with a wide variety of dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, and guinea pigs.
  • Ability to correctly interpret animal body language and adjust practices to reduce fear, anxiety, and stress.
  • Familiarity with computer database applications.
  • Ability to lift and carry weights of up to 50 pounds from floor level to waist height frequently.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on your feet all day.
  • Able to bend, squat, lift, walk, and stand for the majority of an 8-hour shift.
  • Frequent exposure to loud noise, odors, and chemicals.

Nice To Haves

  • Shelter or kennel setting experience is a plus.
  • Passion for working with animals and people.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily cleaning of animal spaces, including housing, outdoor exercise areas, storage, equipment, dishes, laundry, and transport items, adhering to HSSV model shelter standards.
  • Monitor the health and behavior of animals, adjusting feeding, handling, and administering medications as needed.
  • Maintain welcoming animal spaces and ensure animals receive daily minimum enrichment activities.
  • Identify animals needing additional enrichment and monitor their response.
  • Advocate for animals requiring intervention beyond standard animal care.
  • Unload, store, and replenish animal care supplies, maintaining clean and organized storage areas and workstations.
  • Assist in housing animals from animal control trucks, transport vehicles, and public intake.
  • Complete and ensure accuracy of paperwork for animals and handle data entry for incoming animals and daily activities.
  • Assist with and perform humane euthanasia of shelter animals and animals owned by the public with compassion and empathy, minimizing fear, anxiety, and stress.
  • May be asked to complete state certification.
  • Other job duties may be assigned as needed.
