About The Position

The Lead CRNA role involves significant responsibility in operational management and direct patient care within the anesthesiology department. Key duties include quarterly scheduling for CRNAs, managing the core or OR in the supervisor's absence, attending management meetings when necessary, and coordinating with the pharmacy for medication supply. The role also focuses on collaborating with OR leadership to optimize efficiency across all anesthetizing sites and communicating with other Prisma Health facilities to ensure effective staff utilization and care delivery in all operating rooms. This position requires formulating anesthetic plans with anesthesiologists, discussing these plans with patients, and preparing for anesthetic administration. It also involves performing clinical anesthesia care, including special line placements, and maintaining comprehensive documentation of patient care, charges, and controlled substance use. The Lead CRNA must maintain age-specific competence in technical anesthesia skills such as airway management, induction, blocks, and general anesthesia, and stay current with anesthesia pharmacology, modalities, techniques, and technology. Ensuring a safe practice environment by minimizing risks of infection, injury, stress, and equipment failure is also a critical aspect of the role. Additionally, the position requires performing Point of Care testing as needed.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Anesthesia
  • 2 years of clinical anesthesia care experience
  • Certification in nurse anesthesia by NBCRNA (LAWSON CODE CRNA)
  • Registered as an Advanced Practice Nurse by the State Board of Nursing (LAWSON CODE NLAP)

Nice To Haves

  • CRNA's which graduated before December 31, 2003, from an advanced, organized formal education program for nurse anesthetists accredited by the national accreditation organization of the CRNA specialty (in lieu of Master's Degree in Anesthesia)
  • Team members employed in this job prior to July 1, 2020 are grandfathered under prior educational and experience requirements.
  • Team members must be certification eligible and will have one year to obtain required certification.

Responsibilities

  • Scheduling each quarter for CRNAs
  • Running the core (at Prisma Health) or the OR (at Community facilities) when the supervisor is unavailable
  • Attend meetings if supervisor or manager is unavailable
  • Coordinating with the pharmacy to ensure that the necessary medications are on site to be able to deliver safe care (Community facilities)
  • Work with OR leadership to maximize efficiency in all anesthetizing sites within their facility
  • Communicate daily with other Prisma Health facilities to maximize use of staff to efficiently provide care in all Prisma Health operating rooms
  • Run the board/Operating Room
  • Attend meetings
  • Coordinate with pharmacy
  • Maximize staffing throughout the system
  • Work with OR leadership
  • Formulates anesthetic plan with anesthesiologist
  • Discusses plan and the risks, benefits and options with the patient
  • Prepares for the administration of anesthetic and implementation of plan
  • Perform clinical anesthesia care
  • Performs special line placement procedures granted within the guidelines for the practice setting, including but not limited to intravenous and arterial line insertion
  • Documents appropriate data on pre-anesthesia assessment
  • Documents intra-operative anesthesia care on intra-op anesthesia record, including but not limited to charting vital signs, drug deliveries, fluid and blood deliveries, fluid loss, events and their times, and appropriate comments
  • Documents appropriate charges, quality indicators, and controlled substance disbursement, use and waste
  • Maintains age specific competence in anesthesia technical skills appropriate for the practice setting
  • Maintains and acquires new knowledge of anesthesia pharmacology (including new drugs), anesthesia modalities, techniques, and technology
  • Provides a safe practice environment by utilizing a systematic approach to minimize risk (to patient and providers) of infection, physical injury, psychological stress, and equipment failure
  • Performs Point of Care testing , as required by regulatory requirements and organization policy and procedures
