The Anesthesia Technician is responsible for ensuring that anesthesia supplies and equipment are readily available for anesthesia providers.

Requirements

  • Medical students actively matriculating into a medical school program with an interest in anesthesiology.
  • Or High school diploma or GED; prefer at least 30 hours or equivalent of college or technical training with emphasis on biology and Human Anatomy.
  • At least one year of experience in the health-related field or in basic/biologic science with working knowledge of aseptic techniques and procedures.
  • An Associate's degree in a health-related field or current enrollment in an Associates program in a health-related field can substitute for work experience.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator Designation: Will operate vehicles for an assigned business purpose as a frequent driver
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: None

Responsibilities

  • Designated Supplies are available when needed. Little or no time is consumed by clinical personnel in acquiring items that have been predetermined to be on established lists.
  • Achieves: Restocks assigned areas throughout the workday. Constantly visit anesthetizing areas to see if additional supplies are needed during cases. Restocks between cases by following the "Turnover Checklist." Monitors items on shelves to ensure they are properly organized to prevent mixed items. Constantly rotates items to remove out-of-date or expired items. Anticipates supplies needed for procedures. Assists in setup for procedures. Completely restock carts, and machines in assigned areas, according to established lists, after final daily use. Orders necessary supplies and equipment to maintain anesthesia services. Puts away supplies received from Stores, Pharmacy, and special orders. Keeps Lead Tech and Supervisor informed of shortages the tech is not able to remedy.
  • Exceeds: Consistently looking for additional responsibilities as evidenced by two requests in the past evaluation period. Has recommended at least one quality improvement project/process in the last evaluation period.
  • Anesthetizing areas and equipment are consistently ready in regards to appearance and sanitary conditions. They are clean and free from bodily fluids, dust and dirt. They are free from contamination by communicable diseases.
  • Achieves: Between Cases, quickly and thoroughly wipes down all surfaces on anesthesia machine, cart and related equipment. Properly cleans, decontaminates and sterilizes equipment as described in procedures specific to that equipment. At the end of the daily use, carefully examines and wipes down all surfaces on the anesthesia machine, cart and related anesthesia equipment, removing all signs of blood, dust and dirt. Cleans inside drawers and cabinets related to anesthesia. Removes dust from underneath equipment and behind anesthesia machine. As needed, decontaminates on the spot or exchanges equipment so that it can be sent for decontamination. On a monthly basis, cleans out assigned carts and anesthesia machines by taking out drawers and removing items and dust which have fallen behind the drawers.
  • Exceeds: Identifies an infection control/patient safety concern, recommends how to address the concern and the recommendation is implemented.
  • Equipment is consistently present and ready for use. Anesthesia machines are tested before the first case of the day. Necessary accessories are also present and available for use.
  • Achieves: Ensures necessary equipment is available and functions at each anesthetizing area, as determined by established lists. This must be done before signing a room off. Excess equipment is taken to the proper storage area to ensure a ready supply. Labels malfunctioning equipment, which is not easily and safely correctable, as "Out of Order". Replaces malfunctioning equipment and directs it to Engineering for repair. Efficiently completes assigned Quality Control Checks. Completes all required equipment competencies. Successfully completes return demonstration for procedure set-up and equipment testing. Escalates any machine failures to the charge nurse and anesthesia provider assigned to that room in real-time and replaces equipment to minimize delays in case progression. Alerts Clinical Engineering as needed for troubleshooting and repair. Assists the anesthesiologist in setting up and troubleshooting.
  • Exceeds: Is proficient with the theory and operation of equipment and is a resource for troubleshooting for peers and anesthesia providers. Assists with the development of annual competency checkoffs. Consistently anticipates special equipment needs determined by procedure.
  • Requested supplies, equipment and services are delivered in a timely manner.
  • Achieves: Ensures phones in assigned areas are functioning properly. Respond quickly and efficiently to requests for supplies and equipment. The response is determined by the priority of the request, either stat, urgent, or routine. Responds immediately to stat calls. Assists PSTs and PCAs with their duties in Perioperative areas to facilitate turnover of rooms, patient throughput and case starts to include but not limited to room cleaning, transport, and assistance with positioning and surgical preps.
  • Exceeds: Anticipates needs and assists in setup of stat procedures. Works hand in hand with anesthesiologists during trauma situations. Consistently recognized as a high performer in periodic evaluations completed by anesthesiologist evaluation.
  • Expected duties performed in an efficient professional manner.
  • Achieves: Attends and actively participates in scheduled training sessions and anesthesia technician meetings. Assists in the orientation of new employees and volunteers by demonstrating proper procedures and techniques. Uses downtime productively and assists PSTs with duties.
  • Exceeds: Conducts training sessions for the benefit of fellow employees. All competencies have been successfully completed
