About The Position

This is a casual position at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE. Casual employees work on an ‘as needed’ basis to meet the business needs, with varying work days and hours from week to week. The typical work schedule is 4am to 2:30pm. The Anesthesia Technician assists anesthesia practitioners and operating room personnel to ensure operative/anesthesia care needs are met. This role involves stocking anesthesia/other supplies, maintaining supply inventories, cleaning and sterilizing equipment according to infection control policies, providing assistance to anesthesia practitioners, keeping the department clean, and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) required.
  • Satisfactory completion of annual mandatory education requirements.
  • Operating room and/or hospital experience preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with hospital personnel, patients, and the public.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and Word (equivalent to Level I experience for all programs).
  • Ability to learn materials management inventory system.
  • Ability to analyze product/supply literature, manage inventory needs.
  • Ability to prioritize time and tasks according to the needs of patients and the Department of Anesthesia without prompting.

Nice To Haves

  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Placing clean circuits on machines at the beginning of each day and after a case is completed.
  • Ensuring anesthetic agents are available for the days' cases and checking expiration dates.
  • Maintaining sodasorb to ensure proper filtering of anesthesia machines.
  • Terminally cleaning anesthesia machines daily to ensure a clean environment.
  • Ensuring reusable equipment is clean (e.g., blood pressure cuffs).
  • Placing clean back circuits on appropriate machines weekly.
  • Knowledgeable in the location and ability to change O2 tanks when empty.
  • Ensuring all cables, cuffs and lines attached to the anesthesia machine are available.
  • Ensuring suction apparatus and supplies are available.
  • Troubleshooting problems with monitoring equipment.
  • Checking all cables and lines attached to the anesthesia monitoring equipment.
  • Cleaning Medication Carts daily to ensure a clean environment.
  • Ensuring sharps containers are changed when appropriate fill levels are met.
  • Restocking medication carts with supplies as designated on the inventory list.
  • Ensuring supplies fit in drawers in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Checking all supplies/medications monthly for outdates.
  • Ensuring the top of the cart is free of debris.
  • Disposing of contaminated materials in accordance with infection control policy.
  • Completing all Omnicell and Anesthesia Workstation stockouts/refills of controlled substance and non-controlled substance medications prior to end of shift.
  • Returning all unused/extra medications to pharmacy prior to the end of shift.
  • Ensuring the Difficult Airway Cart is stocked with necessary airway supplies.
  • Identifying all components of intubating scopes to recognize when pieces are missing.
  • Placing intubating scope in appropriate container prior to sending to Sterile Processing.
  • Troubleshooting any malfunction of scope, i.e., broken fibers.
  • Ensuring the Malignant Hyperthermia Tote is stocked with appropriate supplies.
  • Ensuring tote is checked for outdates.
  • Returning outdated medication to pharmacy when applicable.
  • Knowing the location of the tote and ensuring it is available when needed.
  • Differentiating between techniques of cleaning, high-level disinfecting, and sterilizing reusable equipment (Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA's), Glidescope, Laryngoscope Blades, etc.).
  • Following infection control policy/procedure for cleaning of reusable equipment (enzymatic cleaning, storage, etc.).
  • Inspecting for rubber breakdown on LMA's and Fastrach.
  • Cleaning the exterior casing of Bard InfusOR, Computer Assisted Drug Design (CADD) Prizm Pumps.
  • Cleaning Blood Pressure Cuffs.
  • Able to locate and retrieve anesthesia equipment from sterile processing.
  • Identifying supplies by name to ensure accuracy in stocking of supplies.
  • Maintaining appropriate levels of inventory.
  • Understanding the importance of monitoring expiration dating by rotating stock.
  • Maintaining appropriate levels of supplies and medications on carts used for stocking surgical suites.
  • Ensuring that surgical suites are stocked and prepared for all cases.
  • Identifying when supplies need to be ordered and notifying appropriate personnel.
  • Understanding special order items and time constraints on delivery.
  • Checking in supplies ordered and placing them in the appropriate location for storage.
  • Performing minor housekeeping duties as required, e.g., folding towels.
  • Maintaining batteries in anesthesia equipment, e.g., Bard Infusion Pumps.
  • Maintaining a clean, uncluttered environment to allow for a safe environment.
  • Restocking inventory that is stored in the anesthesia supply room.
  • Checking medications for outdates and returning them to pharmacy.
  • Knowledgeable in the set up of O2 transport.
  • Responding to needs of physicians and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA's) throughout the day.
  • Available to respond to requests during cases; answering pages in a timely manner.
  • Available to clean rooms to ensure a timely turnover between cases.
  • Available to assist with patients while a physician administers an epidural.
  • Providing assistance while recognizing practice limitations.
