About The Position

The Lead Anesthesia Technician assists the licensed anesthesia providers in the acquisition, preparation and application of the equipment and supplies required for the administration of anesthesia. To contribute to safe, efficient and cost-effective anesthesia care. Provide support in anesthesia for routine and complex surgical cases. Prepare and maintain patient monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems before, during and after anesthesia. Administration duties include, but are not limited to, the ability to coordinate the daily routine of the technical anesthesia staff, employee scheduling, evaluations and program development, reviewing job descriptions and service agreements. Must be able to prioritize and delegate responsibilities to other members of the anesthesia team. Understands the costs that are incurred for anesthesia providers. Maintains professional confidentiality. Understands limitations of roles or practice area. Actively participates in the development and/or administration of continuing education for the anesthesia technicians, and communicates with vendors regarding anesthesia supplies. Demonstrates practical knowledge and expertise in all general areas of anesthesia and has an understanding of advanced life support. Has a thorough knowledge of the set-up, operation and troubleshooting of anesthesia delivery systems, monitors, and ancillary devices. Maintains a sufficient inventory of all equipment and supplies. Knowledgeable of all guidelines, policies and safety requirements as determined by all relevant regulatory and standard setting agencies or organizations. Possesses an understanding of anatomy and physiology as it applies to anesthesia care. Performs effectively in the areas where anesthesia is provided, assists with patient assessment, evaluations, transport, positioning, insertion of intravenous and other invasive lines, and airway management.

Requirements

High school Diploma or equivalent.
American Heart Association BLS provider required.
Two years experience of full time day shift work experience in hospital setting (operating-room preferred) or ASATT certification.
Understanding and awareness of policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.
Ability to identify and understand issues, problems and opportunities; determines course of action; develops appropriate solutions.

Responsibilities

Directs ordering of anesthesia supplies and medications
Keeps anesthesia work room neat and orderly
Checks other areas, (PACU, ICU, CCU) for monitoring devices for patient transfer and return to surgery unit
Assists in maintaining equipment in proper working order
Cleans all non-disposable anesthesia equipment
Returns cleaned equipment to its proper place
Promptly responds to page for anesthesia turn-over between cases
Identifies, tags and sends malfunctioning equipment to Materials Manager for repair or replacement
Shows initiative towards learning new and additional responsibilities
Practices safety standards in the performance of patient care and unit activities
Reset of room, including cleaning of all lines, cables, ect., between patients
Cleaned lines/cables are placed in a manner conducive to remain clean
Understanding and practice of Universal Precautions, according to OSHA regulations
Practice includes the understanding of cross-contamination theories, as out-lined in Dept. P&P
Supports the hospital’s philosophy and objectives
Applies aseptic technique and knowledge in the spiking of IVs & A-lines or other invasive lines
Correctly labels/dates and applies initials to pre-set lines
Charges appropriately by either PYXIS or special order
Returns and credits, items removed from PYXIS, but not used
Practices cost-effectiveness by stocking according to PAR levels
Efficiently cleans and utilizes anesthesia instruments and equipment
Works with Materials Manager in ordering, stocking and identifies equipment shortage
Performs basic reparative action (trouble-shooting) follows through to initiate repair and resolve malfunction immediately
Assists other personnel in location of anesthesia equipment for the pediatric, adolescent, adult or geriatric patient
Demonstrates correct procedure in handling medical waste, contaminated supplies and materials
Demonstrates skill and good judgement when responding to anesthesia emergencies
Demonstrates ability to establish priorities when performing duties
Shows progress towards reaching goals established in previous evaluation
Reviews information presented in Staff Meetings, when unable to attend
Application of new information toward meeting self-motivational goals & tasks
Maintains open communication with the ORD, Charge RN, Lead SPD Tech
Assists with regional anesthesia, epidural, & Bier Block
Assists all anesthesia personnel MD, Residents & CRNAs in gathering supplies for hemo- dynamic monitoring, A-line, CP, COs, etc.
Assists with fiberoptic bronchoscopy & TEEC
Performs set-up of Hot-lines, Heated Circuits, PA, A_line and tests for patency
Prepares and check for leaks in all circuits
Responds to alarm systems to assist with trouble shooting
Aids and performs ABGs with 100% accuracy
Knows the emergency procedure for Hyperthermia
Checks and restock Code Box, charges appropriately
Assist with patient pick up and blood product pick-up.
