The Anesthesia Tech sets up monitoring equipment in the operating room, including the operating table, autotransfusion system, ECG and temperature cables, hyper/hypothermia blanket, medication and pressure manifolds, rapid infusion warmer, recorders, defibrillators, the patient monitoring system, and transesophageal echocardiography imaging unit (TEE) machines. During surgical procedures, the tech assists in the insertion of arterial pressure lines, central venous and Swan-Ganz catheter insertion, draws arterial and/or venous blood samples for diagnostic testing, checks ventilators for proper operating efficiency, operates monitor and recording systems, and identifies various intubation equipment. The role also involves calibrating pressure and recording systems, assisting in patient transfers, cleaning and stocking equipment, moving anesthesia equipment, and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions. The Anesthesia Tech must demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served, understanding growth and development principles and assessing patient status based on age-specific needs.
