About The Position

onX is seeking an Android Engineer III who will contribute to meaningful, real-world outcomes that have a lasting impact for customers and the business. In this role, you’ll build and scale experiences for hunters as part of the Hunt team. You’ll support onX's goal of delivering a best-in-class Hunt experience from onboarding through the season. You’ll take ownership of your work, collaborate closely with partners across the organization, and help move initiatives forward in an environment where priorities evolve, learning is celebrated, and you’re encouraged to keep stretching your skills. This role will report to the Engineering Manager of Hunt.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of professional software development experience is required, where Android development (Kotlin and/or Java) was your professional focus for at least two (2) or more years.
  • You evaluate technologies and solutions based on merit, stability, performance, and the ability to debug, and you write maintainable, well-tested code that's easy for others to understand.
  • A strong sense of ownership, a desire to mentor and be mentored, and advocacy for the customer and their experience.
  • A strong curiosity for exploring new technologies, including AI.
  • A hypothesis-driven, metrics-oriented approach - comfort forming hypotheses, running experiments, and letting data guide iteration.
  • Continuous Integration experience

  • Permanent US work authorization is a condition of employment with onX.
  • Ability to travel on occasion for multiple days to a corporate office or other onX strategic location, such as a Basecamp.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with experimentation and analytics tooling - e.g., Split/Eppo, client event instrumentation
  • Knowledge of asynchronous programming using Flows and Coroutines
  • Knowledge of modern android development libraries such as Jetpack Compose
  • Knows when to optimize for speed vs. quality
  • Ability to work effectively with a distributed team

Responsibilities

  • Design and build an Android application focused on engaging experiences.
  • Partner with engineers and product managers across teams to integrate with services cleanly.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions and write thorough unit, integration, and acceptance tests to keep the app reliable, performant, and maintainable.
  • Provide code review and coverage across the team's work to keep everyone shipping.
  • Design, build, and analyze A/B experiments
  • Look for opportunities to embed AI as a repeatable co-pilot in daily workflows by integrating experimentation into real work, and continuously refining its use with sound judgment and validation.
