About The Position

Reporting to the Senior Conservator, Textiles, the Andrew W. Mellon Fellow will engage in the examination and treatment of 20th and 21st century costumes, participate in activities related to preventive conservation, photography, exhibitions, and loans. The position provides training and research opportunities and includes a stipend for research and travel, given at the discretion of the Director of Conservation. This Fellowship is a one-year position with the potential for renewal.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Textiles Conservation.
  • Experience handling and treating costume in museum collections.
  • Excellent manual dexterity and sewing skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates visual, manual, and scholarly aptitudes.

Nice To Haves

  • Some knowledge of fashion history is preferred.
  • Some knowledge of garment construction and pattern making is preferred.
  • Experience conducting research.
  • Experience with TMS is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Examines, documents and treats a wide range of costumes
  • Supports preventive conservation activities, exhibitions, and loans, as well as conservation outreach
  • Collaborates with conservators, conservation scientists, collections care specialists, costume installation specialists, curators and other Museum staff
  • Develops a research project focused on artist materials or techniques and/or new treatment methodologies in collaboration with the Center’s Research Laboratory
  • Publishes and/or presents the research in a professional journal or conference
  • Participates in informal lectures, symposia, workshops, as well as visits, and collaborates with nearby cultural institutions
  • Couriers works of art on loan or exhibition to other museums and institutions
  • May work at offsite storage locations
