About The Position

Champion Petfoods is expanding and seeking an Analytical Laboratory Technician to join their rapidly growing company. Champion Petfoods is an award-winning pet food maker with over 35 years of trust, known for its ORIJEN® and ACANA® brands, and is a significant player in the global premium pet food industry. The Analytical Laboratory Technician will be part of the BAFRINO Laboratory team, ensuring the goals of the Corporate QFS and Research & Innovation teams (RISE Team) are met. The position involves performing full nutritional analytical testing of assigned products and reporting to the Global Manager, Laboratory, in coordination with the Lab Operational Lead. The technician will also assist in resolving technical problems and will be based at the BAFRINO Laboratory in the NorthStar (NS) Kitchen at Acheson, AB.

Requirements

  • A University Degree in Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry or related Sciences with relevant experience.
  • Minimum of two years working experience within an analytical chemical laboratory, with conducting testing.
  • Detail-oriented, with a good ability to review documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance to SOPs and GMP.
  • Good communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Works well under pressure and able to multi-task.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Good time management.
  • Computer proficiency with MS Office programs (Excel) and LIMS.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in proximate composition testing (Moisture, protein, fat, etc.) desirable.
  • Knowledge of LC/LC-MS, GC/GC-MS, and ICP-OES would be considered an asset.
  • Good understanding of ISO 17025.
  • Data Analytics experience with Python or R would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze samples according to standard procedures or as instructed by Lab Operational Lead.
  • Prepare chemical reagents, solutions, and buffers needed to perform routine testing.
  • Perform chemical analysis of finished products, raw materials and ingredients.
  • Perform instrument troubleshooting, calibrations and maintenance.
  • Maintain data and quality control records.
  • Maintain clean and organized laboratory.
  • Notify Lab Operational Lead on the lab chemical and supplies inventory level.
  • Assist in development of new analytical methods as needed as a part of the portfolio expansion of the BAFRINO Lab.
  • Follow and adhere to all given instructions including working procedures, Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs), Good Manufacturing Practices, and Safety requirements for handling different chemicals in co-ordination with the NS Health, Safety and Environment team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
