About The Position

Stepan is seeking an Analytical Chemist to join our R&D team at the Global Technology Center in Northfield, IL. This onsite position reports to the Analytical Innovation Manager and involves working in a laboratory setting to prepare samples, perform analyses, and interpret data. The Chemist will support manufacturing sites by developing, implementing, and validating analytical methods, while also contributing to current and future regulatory initiatives. This role includes ownership of general analytical projects, offering opportunities to expand technical expertise, develop new skills, and collaborate with cross-functional teams across R&D and manufacturing. We are looking for a self-motivated, detail-oriented, and collaborative scientist with a strong commitment to innovation and continuous learning.

Requirements

  • Experience working in a lab environment with a strong commitment to safe lab practices.
  • Demonstrated hands-on lab skills with strong attention to detail and the ability to accurately follow written procedures.
  • Experience with analytical techniques such as chromatography (HPLC, GPC, GC), mass spectrometry, and/or spectroscopy (FTIR, NIR, NMR, UV-Vis) is required.
  • Must be able to work onsite in our Northfield laboratory.
  • Capable of extended periods of sitting, standing, and computer use, with the ability to safely access materials in elevated storage areas.
  • Must use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when working in the lab.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ICP-OES, titrations, and other general analysis techniques is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Execute analytical projects independently, following established methods and drawing data-driven conclusions.
  • Apply technical expertise to troubleshoot issues and support successful project outcomes.
  • Perform analytical testing (NMR, LC/LC-MS, MS, GPC) and routine wet chemistry analyses.
  • Analyze and interpret data to support R&D activities.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory documentation, including electronic notebooks, reports, and project trackers.
  • Communicate results clearly through written reports and cross-functional updates.
  • Adhere strictly to safety and waste management policies.
  • Contribute to process improvements, knowledge sharing, and team development.
  • Manage laboratory supplies and support project resource planning.
