About The Position

The purpose of the Ammonia Refrigeration Supervisor is to maintain Ammonia equipment; repair boilers, chillers and auxiliary equipment (pumps, steam/water valves, air compressors, high‑pressure condensate, evaporators, condensers etc). This role involves filling in for and supervising the Ammonia Manager, training and developing team members in maintaining an ammonia refrigeration system, and partnering with the Maintenance department to support all facilities maintenance. The supervisor will also assist with general facility maintenance needs, cost reduction efforts, and energy efficiency initiatives. Key responsibilities include monitoring load demands, adjusting equipment to maintain output, managing chemical feed systems, understanding and maintaining controls, inspecting safety devices, reporting issues, assisting with repairs, and maintaining room cleanliness and safety standards. The role emphasizes driving good practices, performing root cause failure analysis, assisting with annual inspections, demonstrating safe work practices, documenting work using software, and adhering to Process Safety Management (PSM) procedures, including using the ePSM system and working with third-party vendors. The supervisor must be able to perform other facility, maintenance, building, and grounds tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • Operator 1 Ammonia Certification (minimum requirement).
  • Working towards certification for Operator 2 Ammonia Certification.
  • RETA Certification.
  • Hazwoper certification.
  • Certified to work on and do repair service to the ammonia system.
  • 2-5 years of real work experience as a refrigeration technician/operator.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid certifications for position.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in reading schematics and using software to track equipment, work, time, inspections and expense.
  • Experience in process safety management and using software to track all Ammonia system records.
  • Ammonia refrigeration experience.
  • Knowledge of engine & boiler systems.
  • Knowledge of electricity & motor controls.
  • Knowledge of pneumatics & hydraulics.
  • Mechanical systems experience with predictive/preventive maintenance.
  • Knowledge of site utilities.
  • System troubleshooting skills.
  • Skills in pipefitting, welding, machining, or metal fabrication.
  • Skills in electrical and controls.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain Ammonia equipment.
  • Repair boilers, chillers, and auxiliary equipment (pumps, steam/water valves, air compressors, high-pressure condensate, evaporators, condensers etc).
  • Fill in for and supervise the Ammonia Manager.
  • Train and develop team members in maintaining an ammonia refrigeration system.
  • Partner with Maintenance department team members to support all facilities maintenance.
  • Assist and be knowledgeable in any maintenance needs within the facility, building, grounds, facilities, material handling equipment, MHE equipment etc.
  • Assist with cost reduction and work to be as energy efficient as possible.
  • Monitor load demands and adjust boilers, compressors, and pumps to maintain required steam, air, and water output.
  • Monitor and adjust chemical feed systems for water treatment to ensure proper levels.
  • Understand and maintain valves and equipment controls to regulate steam, water, and fuel flow, refrigeration.
  • Inspect boiler safety devices, chillers, and observe meters/gauges to ensure proper operation.
  • Report and document abnormal conditions or major repairs needed to the system.
  • Assist in corrective action and repairs on the system as needed.
  • Train others in all repairs and processes.
  • Assist with repairs (meters, valves, gaskets, joints) as needed.
  • Maintain boiler/chiller/compressor room cleanliness and safety standards.
  • Drive good practices and standards to strive towards excellence.
  • Be familiar with root cause failure analysis in order to prevent failures, extend the life of equipment and save cost.
  • Assist in annual inspections and preparation.
  • Demonstrate safe work practices and adherence to organizational safety programs.
  • Document and use software to track work, time, parts, compliance preventive, and predictive maintenance for the reliability of the system.
  • Assist and maintain all guidelines associated with Process Safety Management procedures.
  • Document all records and use the ePSM system to meet compliance requirements.
  • Work with 3rd party vendors to support PSM.
  • Perform any other task for facilities, maintenance, building and grounds for BEK.
